New Maruti Suzuki Wagon R launched!

Maruti Suzuki will launch its all-new Wagon R, come April 23rd. This all-new Wagon R is based on a new platform that currently underpins the Wagon R in the Japanese market. The Wagon R is taller, wider and longer than before and sports new suspension componentry at both the front and the rear.

Power for the new Wagon R will come via the 1.0-litre K Series engine from the A-Star/Estilo with the same 67 bhp of peak power and nearly 10 kgm of peak torque. What Maruti Suzuki have done is altered the gear ratios to make this three-cylinder engine more driveable in the heavier Wagon R. A new dashboard with more features and an integrated audio system are also part of the car in the higher VXi version as well as rear wash-wiper which makes a come back. The larger dimensions also means there is more space on the inside while the seats have gotten wider and more comfortable.

Maruti Suzuki has invested close to Rs 600 crore in this project – around Rs 350 crore at the R&D and assembly line level and Rs 250 crore at the supplier level. Maruti Suzuki will launch the car in three trims - LX, LXi and VXi, but won't be launching a Duo version initially. The Duo LPG version currently constitues about 22-25 per cent of the total sale basket of all Wagon Rs sold. The Wagon R is currently the second best selling model in Maruti's stable and over 800,000 Wagon Rs have been sold since it was first launched in late-1999.
