Maharashtra to waive taxes for electric vehicles

January 4, 2016: The Maharashtra government will waive VAT, road tax and registration charges for electric vehicles, union power minister Piyush Goyal said in Chennai, while inaugurating a bio-gas plant using waste at the Mahindra World City.

Goyal urged other state governments to follow Maharashtra’s example to encourage electric vehicles in a bid to tackle pollution. The central government would support such initiatives that would help make the country cleaner and greener, he added.

The minister said that the government was keen to develop an infrastructure that would enable electric vehicles to be charged at petrol pumps. “We are working towards building that infrastructure,” he said. “It could be a public-private partnership.”
