Imagine all the fun you can have on a CBR 250R and multiply it by two. That's what, it appears, the new Honda 500 series is going to be all about. Three different motorcycles, a common platform, and lots of exciting bits mean your next bike can very well be any of these three - the CB500, CBR500 and CB500X. The CB is the naked version with a 500cc (no exact figures yet, but watch this space), parallel-twin motor (common to all three) that is expected to produce around 50 bhp, and it will be slotted bang in between the KTM 390 Duke and the Kawasaki Ninja 650R.
The CBR is, of course, the full-faired version that imitates the CBR 1000RR in terms of looks but is actually more in a sports tourer mould. The handlebars are rather high-up and the footpegs, too, aren't as rear-set as you'd imagine on your dream-come-true 500 parallel-twin monster! Still, it should be a good middle-weight motorcycle considering it will have a good balance of power, comfort and, of course, aesthetics. The CB500X - a cross-tourer of sorts is least likely to come to India although a mid-range do-it-all should add value to Honda's line-up considering the closest competition comes only from BMW, with its 650 GS priced at over Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
We'll keep you posted with more details as and when they keep popping up. Until then, fingers crossed!
