F1: Button heads the timing sheets

The first practice session of the Candian GP saw Jenson Button pip Michael Schumacher and McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the top of the timing sheets. Button had a time of 1m18. 127 seconds, 0.156 seconds ahead of Mercedes' Schumacher. Most of the practice session was a battle between the two McLarens and Schumacher, with Schumacher managing to seperate the two McLarens at the end of the session. Schumacher's team-mate, Nico Rosberg made it a fruitful day for Mercedes, hauling his car up to fourth spot.

Schumacher managed to push the limit a fair amount, so much so that he even had a few off track excursions. He wasn't the only one though - Alonso, Petrov, Buemi, Hamilton and Senna all straight-lined chicanes, while Pedro de la Rosa even spun his Sauber.

Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel finished in fifth position. Mark Webber, who currently heads the championship table only managed to finish 14th.
