Car wars at the Delhi Auto Expo

French carmaker Renault will unveil new versions of the Kwid in February 2016. The company said a one-litre engine variant and an automated manual transmission (AMT) variant would make their debut at the Delhi Auto Expo in Greater Noida over February 5-9, 2016.

The AMT model will directly complete with rival Maruti's Alto and the Kwid with the one litre engine will rival the Hyundai Eon 1.0, Maruti's Alto K10, Wagon R and Celerio. Renault's one-litre engine model will feature ABS and dual front airbags. Renault is expected to bring in larger tyres, retractable seat belts and twin wipers on the new Kwid.

The Alto is India's largest selling passenger vehicle and its closest rival has been from the Hyundai stable. Renault looks like it is about to alter that equation.

Maruti, for its part, will showcase a slew of vehicles at the Expo. It will launch the Ignis, a crossover, competing with the Mahindra KUV100. It will also showcase the Vitara Brezza, Maruti's first sub-compact SUV, which is especially tailored to suit Indian conditions.

Maruti's seven-seater WagonR, another candidate for the Expo, keeps the family in mind. After the runaway success of its WagonR, the seven-seater version is aimed at buyers who want a comfortable, affordable family car. The Maruti Alto 800 diesel version is likely to be India's most fuel-efficient car. Besides a new diesel engine-one that the Celerio uses, a 793cc, two-cylinder engine-the Alto 800 will get a facelift.

After the success of the Baleno, Maruti is expected to showcase a more powerful version of the premium hatchback to lure buyers who want a fun-to-drive car with an attractive price.

Luxury carmaker Audi says it will launch three models at the Delhi show. It will showcase its new generation Audi R8 V10, powered by a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine in two trims with different power outputs, 547 PS and 618 PS, which will be transmitted to all four wheels through Audi's Quattro drive system. The new R8 also has new styling that is likely to flag attention.

Audi's A8 L Security is an armoured vehicle for its elite customers. Made at Audi's top-secret plant in Neckarsulm, Germany, the A8 L Security has been built from a specially designed platform, and offers its occupants maximum safety.

Audi's Prologue concept, a five-door model with a raised body structure, is guaranteed to make heads turn at the Expo. The Prologue concept combines new-age technology without compromising everyday practicality of the vehicle.
