BMW Chennai plant starts production of new BMW 5 Series

  The luxury car maker BMW's Chennai manufacturing plant has started the production of the all-new BMW 5 Series, which is scheduled to be launched in India later this month.

BMW Group India President Vikram Pawah said, "The all-new BMW 5 Series that will be launched this month has everything that is needed to take the Indian luxury car segment by storm. I would like to congratulate the Plant Chennai team for achieving this important milestone and we are extremely proud for the smooth start of [the] production."

The Chennai facility has been producing cars for the last 10 years and is ready to roll-out the new 5 Series, said Jochen Stallkamp, managing director, BMW Plant Chennai. The facility started operations in March, 2007, and locally produces the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5.

The total number of employees at BMW Group India is over 650. More than 3,000 additional jobs have been created in the dealer and service network, said the company.

Apart from the manufacturing facility in Chennai, the car maker owns a subsidiary along with a training centre in Gurgaon, NCR along with a parts warehouse in Mumbai.
