Karjat has a beautiful place called Kondana caves. From Karjat, enquire for Kondana caves. I don't know the exact distance, but we usually catch an auto rickshaw for Rs.100 one direction(we go 4 people in one rickshaw). The auto rickshaw will drop us at the maximum point till where there is road and after that you will have to walk, you will have a breathtaking experience from there. This place itself is a breathtaking experience, if you are a trekker, you can trek to the kondana caves, its a small cave, where water falls from top before the entrance of the cave. Best season to go is during July - September, mainly during very cloudy days. While returing, you will have to walk a little more, so that you get some tempos till Karjat station. Vijay Shankar

From Mumbai to Kalyan it`s nice after that some bad road till Ulhas Rever, narrow mountain road in Malshej , Murbad Karjat state highway is not in good condition. Again Karjat -Chauk-Panvel -Mumbai is nice Ajinkya Vaze

Route description

This may be just a 310 km route, and not more than 60 km is proper mountain twisty type, but this is one tiring day. Which, is a guarantee of great sleep. The ride up to Malshej is pretty cool, as you avoid traffic almost all the way. The ghat roads are AWESOME, Mumbai-Goa types should think Poladpur-Chiplun. The small turn off the Karjat is almost unmarket and is the Maharashtra State Highway 38. The 50 km ride is on okay to good roads, not very twisty, but not very straight either. Lack of traffic is a huge attraction. Be careful on the Karjat-Chauk stretch which is chockful of idiots in cars heading to Matheran.

Stopovers

Lots of highway Dhaba types along the way

Fuel Stations
Lots till Murbad, none between Murbad and Karjat. Lots again between Karjat and Mumbai
Tips
Malshej can get crowded on Sunday, so avoid that day. Especially in the monsoon. Watch for cows all the way, they appear in oddest of places. Ditto ST buses. And they go uphill and downhill almost too fast.
