Who dares, wins!

Ever wondered why every single model replacement is followed by one that is larger? Well, no matter what you do, packaging has its limitations, and the only way to get around it after a point is by pulling at the edges a bit.

So  you will be surprised to find that the Hyundai i10 has actually gained nothing in terms of length and wheelbase over the Santro, while the new kid on the block, the Suzuki Ritz, has instantly gained a couple of centimetres on the Wagon R in practically all areas. So has someone here forgotten the replacement formula, or does the current segment best, the i10, send another potential rival to the bottom of the hatch heap?
Well, numbers do have something to say here. Hyundai sells a little under 8,000 units a month of its wonder car, on an average. And we aren’t even talking exports here! Which is precisely why Maruti Suzuki is looking to grab some part of that slice, with not one, but two cars. The A-Star has grabbed the collar of the base versions of the i10, while the Ritz takes on its Kappa engined variants. A seemingly simple comparison, then? Not quite.

DESIGN
Ideally, this would have been a Ritz-i20 comparison, but for forces prevailing at Maruti’s senior management, who’ve managed to keep the introductory pricing so competitive that the i10 has appeared in its crosshairs. But that has got nothing to do with the design here, right? Uh oh, it does, because you get more metal for your money. Longer than the i10, the Ritz can’t hide its larger proportions, especially since the wider track and taller stance make the Ritz bulkier. The overall design language might not excite, but Suzuki have left behind the Wagon R’s boxy appearance for some curves. What instantly catches your eye is the swooping roofline, which defines the overall design. Tall headlamps and a simple grille remind you of its utilitarian appeal, while the wide rear arches and neatly integrated tail lamps just bring in a slight hint of aggression.
In contrast, the i10 is far more contemporary. When it was first launched a little less than two years ago, it looked like nothing on the road and even today the i10 stands out with its unique pear drop headlamps, its small mustachioed grille, the bonnet that pretends to have a ‘power bump’ and the sweeping C-pillar. You can’t complain about the way it looks, even though some might find it too radical for their appetite.

Why are we all trying to quarrel like cats and dogs?? If i20,Ritz,Swift,Polo,Jazz and Punto are considered are super hatches by the manufacturers, let that be. i10,Wagon R,Beat and Figo will fall in the Hatch segment. You also have Santro,Alto K10 etc a notch below that. Let's understand that i10 is not considered a super hatch by even their manufacturer, Hyundai. It is a much smaller car to be considered a super hatch.

Rohin, just one question. Why hasn't BSM done a proper road test of the Ritz? Only first drives and comparisons are here so far.

Hi Velutha, Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, the i10 sells more than the A-Star in India, and am not even trying to contest that. As for buying the Wagon R, yes Motoring journos make bad decisions at times. Especially in early 2005, when the only other option was the Hyundai Santro Xing. If I did have the i10, A-Star, Ritz, i20, Swift etc etc to also choose from, the story would have been very different.

VELUTHA'S REVIEW-REVIEW "The A-Star has grabbed the collar of the base versions of the i10s" Not really, the A-Star's not even close to the i10, which manages a healthy 11,000 units every month. "as a current owner of a Wagon R" Aren't you ashamed of mentioning that? Pity that even a 'Motoring' journo would buy the worst car possible in its segment. STOP comparing it to the WagonR. This is a Ritz-i10 comparo! Good evaluation of Build Quality, Space & comfort, Powertrains n performance and Dynamics You ought to add the data from spec sheets while uploading stories on the web. Fuel efficiency figures were sorely missed here. Overall a very honest reveiw/comparo. Well done Review rating: 7/10

A very good and unbiased review, considering the pros of cons of both the models.Wagon-R is considered here as Splash (international version of Ritz) was conceptualised as a MPV and a step-ahead of Wagon-R in the Suzuki line of cars.No doublt that,i10 scores ahead in terms of internal finish and quality, but the ultimate asset of a car is its engine and also its ride & handling, where Ritz scores much higher.Interiors can be customized, but not the engine performance. Thus,Ritz would come out of as winner in any of these comparisons (with i10/i20)or similar line of cars in future also! fact is fact, and we all should accept it...

After writing 3 pages, you muddled everything in last paragraph. Is Wagon R is the benchmark of auto world? Where is BMW 300 in comparison to Wagon R? Ritz is such a powerful mover that it will not stop when you want it to stop. 80-0 for Ritz is 40 meters and 80-0 for i10 is 30 meters. Are you saying that if one survived Wagon R then Ritz will take care of your life.

Rohin, I fail to understand your over exhuberence in trying to compare the Ritz with the i20! The feel good factor of the Ritz is confined largely to the car, where as the Hyundai has a far more satisfying customer service. Maruti desperately needs to improve on that front.

Although the i10 is smaller when numbers are considered, it is the more spacious and roomy car here. Also, the Ritz is not path breaking as the Swift or i10. Agreed the engine is a marvel, but that does not alone make a small car complete. And please avoid the comparison of Ritz to i20, it has nowhere near the equipment level.
