Volkswagen AG's management is eyeing the potential acquisition of the Alfa Romeo brand should Fiat SpA consider putting it up for sale, German auto industry newspaper Automobilwoche reported.

"Alfa is a globally recognised brand with sporty genes and a great tradition," the paper quoted a "high ranking" VW manager as saying. "If such a treasure could be had, we must not hesitate ... too long."

Alfa is repeatedly brought into connection with Volkswagen, which has built up an immense cash cushion of euro 17.5 billion ($22.3 billion) to finance plans to overtake Toyota Motor Co in size by 2018.

"As already said by (Chief Executive Sergio) Marchionne, there is no plan to sell the Alfa Romeo brand," a Fiat spokesman said on Monday, while VW declined to comment.

Looks like VW is ever-ready to pounce and take up a good brand!!! But there is a backlash... with all the major takeovers... I find only Audi's purchase of Lamborghini to be a win-win game! Where the Italian style, drama and panache has been kept alive and German refinement, engineering and reliability added to the equation. This is good for the brand. Bugatti brand has also benefited from VW's ownership. Good that after the illfated EB-110 nothing much had happened for Bugatti till the Veyron. However when we see Rolls Royce and Bentley, BMW and VW have in-fact robbed the marque's off their timeless class and elegance and have just made them grotesque and techno-overloaded tasteless automobiles! Rolls and Bentley have lost their `Britishness’ and have become something like the Mercedes Maybach, an advanced car, but very ugly and utterly taseless! German cars have never been known set any styling standards. The Italian and British cars vied for the titles here. In the pros
