Toyota Kirloskar Motor Limited has announced that it is re-opening bookings for the Fortuner, effective July 1, 2010. The company had put its bookings on hold since January 31, 2010 on account of a backlog of orders. The Fortuner was running a six-month waiting period at that time.
The Fortuner, which was launched in August 2009 has become a runaway success, clocking in bookings of over 9000 units at one point. Toyota tried to match up to market demand by ramping up production to about 1000 units a month currently, but that still proved to be too little to meet market demands.
The Fortuner today commands a 60 per cent marketshare in the mid-SUV segment. Toyota currently offers the Fortuner in just one trim and in the manual guise. It has said that it has no plans to launch an automatic version either this year or even next year.
