Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited has launched its first diesel sedan in the country today. The Toyota Corolla diesel, priced at Rs 12.73 lakh, (middle trim), but its base variant starts at a shocking Rs 10.95 lakh, while the top variant goes up to Rs 13.75 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi for the mid-variant is the first foray by the Japanese company in the diesel saloon market in India.
Powered by a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine, it produces about 89 bhp of peak power and 19.4 kgm of peak torque. Currently available in other markets in South-East Asia, the Corolla diesel sports a six-speed manual gearbox and is tuned more for efficiency and driveability rather than outright acceleration and performance. The car delivers a staggering 21.43 kmpl under ARAI test conditions. The Corolla has been quite a success in the fleet segment and with this engine variant it's expected to expand its lead.
Toyota's new diesel saloon will compete with the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze, Skoda Laura and VW Jetta in the Rs 12-15 lakh entry D-segment.
The Corolla Altis Diesel gets a differentiating sporty mesh grille, to distinguish it from the regular Altis. The car is available in seven colours - Silver Mica Metallic, Champagne Mica Metallic, Dark Red Mica Metallic, White Pearl Mica, Light Blue Mica Metallic, Super White and Black Mica.
The Corolla Altis Diesel comes in three manual transmission grades D-4D J, D-4D G and D-4D GL with competitive price tags between 10, 95, 000 and 13, 75, 000, ex-showroom Delhi.
