One of the questions we often get asked in our Which Car section is “When is Toyota going to launch a diesel version of the Corolla?”. Many people write in, expressing their eagerness to buy into the Toyota brand name, for the prestige and reliability the name represents, but these letters often end on a note of disappointment, due to the fact that Toyota doesn’t have a diesel sedan in its portfolio — or at least they didn’t, until now. Toyota has finally bitten the diesel bullet and rolled out the Corolla Altis diesel, and about time too. The competition, in the form of the Chevrolet Cruze, Skoda Laura and Volkswagen Jetta, has been doing healthy numbers in the diesel sedan market. The erstwhile segment king, the (petrol) Honda Civic, has slipped behind the Altis, a fact that the folks at Toyota must be very pleased about — and what better move to make when you’re on a winning note than to throw a diesel engine into the mix? It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that the launch of the diesel-powered Altis is a landmark event, with the potential to cause a major shake-up in the executive sedan segment. Will this mean the end of all those diesel-Toyota Which Car questions? Will the car live up to the huge expectations that have been building up well before its launch, simply because it’s a Toyota? Let’s find out.

The meat of the matter first — the new oil-burning powerplant. I have to admit that it was rather strange to fire up a Corolla and hear anything but a butter smooth, petrol engine note.

any chances of an 6 Speed Automatic ? Toyota really needs to bring the new age automatics, if they really want to fight with laura or cruze.

There are Few other changes in Altis Diesel from petrol Altis. G Model of Petrol have Electro chromatic rear view mirror,Front Fog lamp, these two features are missing in Hg Model Diesel. And Top model HL do not have 8 way power seat. Diesel do not ahve Automatic Gears. To maintain a less price difference in petrol and diesel this features might have removed. Good new is that now base model comes with automatic Climate control Ac.

Instead of maintaining and raising it's position in the Cruze, Laura territory. With this engine selection and the features on offer, Corolla went downwards into Linea/City territory (even there the Linea offers better value) and the Vento is coming . One expects (good low end torque 250Nm+) diesel at 11L starting, not a rat to pull an elephant. Even the 1.9L Octavia gave similar kmpl figures. I think toyota has bet too far, even the front chrome is missing. At most it will convert it's petrol customers to diesel.

GOOD ANALYSIS. WHAT MIGHT WORK FOR TOYOTA HERE IS ITS NAME AND THE CARS OVERALL ERGONOMICS AND AMBIENCE ETC. MECHANICALS ARE NOT IMPRESSIVE. 6 SPEED GEAR BOX WOULD ULTIMATELY PROVE TO BE A LIABILITY. TOO LITTLE IS BEING OFFERED AT THE PRICE BEING CHARGED. AS FAR AS CRUZE IS CONCERNED I WONDER WHY WE IGNORE ITS HIGH RPM AT WHICH THE PEAK TORQUE IS OFFERED.ITS NOT THE POWER BUT THE TORQUE THAT MAKES A DIVERS LIFE EASIER.

Well, not a bad idea to introduce 1.4 d4d, at least its fuel efficient and cheaper in its segment, same as that of Suzuki's or Hyundai's diesel plant. Good for people who want fuel efficiency from a big car advantage. As a car its good, still then it better to have another larger diesel heart to compete with its rivals.

Heart of this car is weak(1.4L)which produces 89 bhp.Toyota should have been selected a diesel engine for corolla atleast 1.8 L or above.Hope that this car will not be a failure like Maruthi 1000 petrol.

just not good enough. Not in terms of engine, not in terms of built quality and performance. Even the exterior is boring. 15 secs to 100 is like a bullock cart and tops out at 171. even swift has better performance figures. DISAPPOINTMENT from toyota.

Well it has a weak heart but engine isn't everything. If it was optra magnum would have thrashed the competition.

The pricing isnt VFM. For 1.4 liter engine, its terribly overpriced! At just 57k's more the Cruze offers better equipments, better looks, better safety and that stonker of a diesel engine which alone is worth a couple of lakhs over the Corolla.
