Six hundred and fifty horses, ready to let loose at a mere dab of the throttle. The pony is back, with a venegeance, this time in the form of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. With 650 bhp and 650 lb-ft of torque, this car has enough grunt to put the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 on the mat.
Under the striped hood is an all-aluminium, 5.8-litre Ford V8 block linked to a supercharger. The motor has new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. The six-speed manual transmission now has a revised final drive ratio and as the press release puts it, can handle the torque adequately.
New among other things is a limited slip differential, Bilstein dampers and a new set of wheels - 19-inch jobbies at the front and 20-inchers at the rear. New brakes from Brembo with six-pot calipers. Oh, and there is a new launch control system too - rubber trails haven't been this better.
