These machines seemed to have been around the since the dawn of time, but even today, have enough sales numbers to justify their existence. Both are hardy workhorses and can be seen plying people from the wastes of Ladakh to the lush greenery of Kerala. The Sumo has been through numerous adaptations and calling it a mini Tata truck (ignore the Ace here) won’t be wrong. The Bolero of course was the first civilised Mahindra after a string of Jeep-based ‘people’ carriers, the last being of course the Armada. The Sumo looks like the designers at Tata didn’t have any other tool other than a ruler, while the Bolero has some characterful lines to it (but they should have let the hinges be exposed). Both of them take to rough terrain like a fish takes to water, but are not exactly great driving machines, considering their questionable dynamics. And passenger comfort also is questionable. The engine of the Bolero feels more refined as compared to the Victa, and it is that way slightly more civilised than the Sumo. Our choice? The Bolero.
