The Toyobaru dream project, a Toyota and Subaru joint development of a new two-seat sportscar is nearing completion as Subaru previewed its near-production concept. Badged as a Toyota FT-86, the production version of the Subaru will hit showrooms by 2012, industry sources suggest.
Under the hood is a 2.0-litre boxer four, reputed to develop at least 200 bhp. With its low centre of gravity and sitting nearly 120 mm lower than any Subaru currently in production, the direct injection gasoline engine has square proportions - the bore x stroke rated at 86 mm x 86 mm. It features a carbon fibre roof, a light yet rigid body structure, 18-inch wheels, light alloy wheels and Brembo brakes.
The STI badged Subaru will be one of three cars on the same platform which includes the Toyota FT-86 and the Scion FR-S concept.
