Skoda's first foray into the crossover/SUV segment in India is all set to be revealed on November 15. The Yeti crossover is up and ready for launch just a month after Skoda put its facelifted Fabia on to showroom floors.
The Yeti will be available for an expected price of Rs 16.5 lakh to 18 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai. Two trim versions, Ambiente and Elegance will be made available when it goes on sale and will be powered by a 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine with 140 bhp of peak power and 32.4 kgm of peak torque. Currently only one transmission will be on offer, a six-speed manual transmission, though a DSG automatic would be a nice addition in the coming months, provided Skoda believes the same.
With its quirky styling and compact dimensions, the Yeti seats five and uses a new varioflex seating system that allows the seats in the second row to to be used in a many ways - they can either be folded down or forward or even removed individually or re-adjusted to make space for two.
Based on the same platform as the Laura, it uses a lot more Laura bits than just the engine. The dashboard, controls and other trim bits are all borrowed from the notchback, and uses the same quality of materials too. Well built interiors apart, it also has good underpinnings, including a smart Haldex four-wheel drive system that transfers as much as 90 per cent torque to the rear wheels.
Skoda is confident of doing some very good numbers with the Yeti. The company has already received over 1000 pre-orders and could be looking at even higher numbers after the launch. Will the Yeti spoil the party for the Toyota Fortuner and the recently launched Tata Aria? Watch this space on Monday to know more.
