It looks like the result of a Fabia being naughty with a Vento and is one of the most successful examples of badge-engineering in the country. Rapid? Vento? Same thing? Technically, yes, but there are differences between the two beyond just looks. Tweaked interiors, better suspension... and of course, it’s a Vento for less money!
Please don’t insist it’s a ‘caaaaaaar’ or something. They will disown you. The Nissan Sunny is a household name globally thanks to being simple, spacious and inexpensive. The only thing you’ll be able to brag about is the fuel-efficiency and interior space. It looks rather bland, though. Works for you?
WHAT ARE YOUR FRIENDS GOING TO SAY BEHIND YOUR BACK ABOUT THIS CAR?
That you just bought a Skoda – a badge considered quite ‘premium’ in India. Be prepared to tackle ‘Why does this look like the Vento?’ questions (read BSM!). They’ll like the bright interiors for sure, but keep them off junk food early enough – those beige seats are a stain magnet. Buy one in black and the non-car guys among your friends
will think it’s a Laura. Tee Hee!
If they’re nice, they’ll go ga-ga over the interior space and the overall ease of operation. If they aren’t, they’ll make faces at what is considered a ‘consumer good’ the world over. Rest assured, you’ve just bought one of the nicest urban sedans in the country. The petrol feels a bit unrefined, more so at higher revs, but the torque-y diesel is the better all-round performer.
IS IT A CAR TO DRIVE OR TO BE DRIVEN IN?
The petrol is quick, the diesel even more so, although the petrol automatic can demand too much of your patience. Space in the back is decent and the interior is well-appointed. Buy the automatic if you don’t mind the economy – your driver (if he’s the racing driver sort) won’t be too fond of you, however.
If you don’t have the services of a chauffeur and want an urban sedan, the Sunny will keep you happy. However, if you’re even remotely enthusiastic about cars, stay away. The Sunny’s forte is its rear-seat comfort and space and this is exactly where you should be. You must note, however, that the Sunny’s controls will appeal much to women and senior citizens, for being light and stress-free.
WHAT WILL YOUR NEIGHBOURS THINK OF YOU WHEN YOU BUY IT?
The Skoda badge is as good as a household name in the country today and is considered a premium brand. This works in favour of the Rapid, no doubt. Although, because it looks a bit bland, your neighbour’s daughter won’t think of you as the most eligible bachelor in town – that tag still goes to anyone with a yellow Octy RS.
That you just bought ‘some car’. Be prepared to field a lot of ‘average kitna hai?’ queries and also some that suggest your car was made by someone who also mass-produces jam.
