Renault's all new Clio

Renault's just launched the new Clio for the European market. The Clio's been one of Renault's highest-selling cars and competes with the likes of the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo in the supermini category. And the new one plans to carry forward that heritage.

We must say this, it's taken a considerable step forward. This car is all new. The exterior has been inspired by the DeZir concept car. Pretty evident that, the huge logo at the front, the thin slot grill running just under the bonnet, the black inserts on the sides, the swept back lines which integrate so perfectly with the rear lamps, it's all just so dynamic. And that's something in the Clio's DNA. The previous one lost the plot a bit but this one has jumped back on to the design bandwagon. And those thin strips of light just next to the headlamps, my god they look striking.

The interior too has been spruced up, there's now more space on the inside, because the wheels have been pushed right to the ends. The centre console is pretty simple and dominated by the 7" touchscreen that can be used to control a large number of the car's features. It's called the 'R-Link' screen and can be configured by the user according to their specifications. A number of personalisation options will be offered as well. And it's party piece, a rather gimmicky R-Sound Effect, which can channel 6 different exhaust notes into the cabin if you're tired of the small displacement whiny engine note.

On the dynamic front, it's got a host of new petrol and diesel engines, including a 899cc three pot 90 bhp, which promises to give good economy and sprightly performance. It's 100 kg lighter than the outgoing model. That's a huge weight saving for a new, standard, non 'RS' car.

We really doubt they're getting this to India, but we're still hoping they do. It could compete against the Swift and the Jazz and give them a run for their money. You know what else we're waiting for? The Renault Sport version, from the looks of it, that car should be a riot when it comes out in 2013. For now though, lets just pray Renault gets this one to India.
