Rajeev KapoorThough a late re-entry into the growing automobile market, Fiat India Automobiles Ltd hopes to establish itself across all segments with a wide range of products and service network, says its president and CEO, Rajeev Kapoor, in an interview with Yogima Seth Sharma. Edited excerpts:

Fiat has brought in two good products in the Indian market but sales are yet to match industry levels. How do you plan to cope?
The basic principle of forming a joint venture with Tata Motors was to bring back the Fiat brand into India and share the Fiat engine technology with Tata Motors. Now that we have achieved both, I think it’s the right time for us to grow in India.

With Grande Punto, Fiat Linea and Fiat 500 in our product stable, we hope to almost double our sales in the country in 2010-11 at 40,000 to 45,000 units, as compared to 23,000 units in 2009-10.

What do you think are the strengths of Fiat in India?
Though we currently have just two models, along with Fiat 500, there are varied engine options across Punto and Linea that help us to cater to a wide spectrum of people. Our spare parts are not just easily available, they are also competitively priced, and Fiat India now has a widespread presence through 175 dealerships.

What are your expansion plans over the next two years?
We are adding another high-end variant of Linea later this year, over and above the high-powered diesel variant of the Grande Punto launched recently.

Our new small car, smaller than the Punto and powered by a 1.0-litre engine, would hit in 2012 and we expect it to be a volume product for the company. Our dealer network will touch 200 by the end of 2010-11 and over a period of time, localisation levels of Punto and Linea are expected to go up from 85 per cent now to 90 per cent, as we strengthen our vendor base.

What has been the progress on your small car?
We have just concluded our customer survey to understand what kind of car they expect in 2012. The product is being jointly developed by our research and development team in India and in Italy. While the styling and designing of the car is being done in Italy, our Indian operation will contribute in component aggregates and reliability test of the vehicle.

How do you see the new small car changing the image of Fiat in India?
The A+ or the B segment, where we have cars like Spark, Santro, etc, is growing very fast in India. In fact, it is a highly cluttered segment, with almost every player present. Despite this, I feel there is space for more to come in, primarily because of extremely low car penetration levels in the country.

Fiat’s ability to make high-tech products and sell these at highly competitive prices as we go down the price ladder will help us to regain our position in India.

complaint ref no-- 1-10568042321 I am A G husband. I gifted her a 1.3 Punto Diesel MJD The vehicle registration number its an exotica red punto MJD 1.3 Vehicle registration number is MH02 BM **** Registered in the name of A G (My Wife) Kindly find her feed back below: Regret buying a Fiat. My husband bought me the exotica red Punto almost a year back. Since that day we have been riddled with problems and today when I need it the most, it is lying in the workshop for all the silly reasons. Why I need it most is because I have just had a baby and undergone an operation for the same. Today even after spending almost seven and a half lakhs on the car, what I have is a useless piece of junk. My husband was an ardent Fiat fan. He considered it to be a performer – a very sturdy car. But after this experience, it has turned out to be the most pathetic car I have ever seen. I had a Wagon R before this which was bought for almost half the cost and I used it for ab

Hello, I am one of the most discontented customers owning the Fiat Linea. I believe you receive my complaints every now and then. I don’t think that this email will bring any change in the functioning and query resolution of the customers but still I felt like writing the mail and want to draw the interest of seniors towards customer satisfaction. I am not at all pleased with the type of service I am getting from Hind Motors Mohali. First of all the staff is not at all knowledgeable. They don’t know the basic of their job. Every time I have a complaint with my vehicle, 1 or 2 problems stand unresolved and I have to visit the service station again and again for that work to be done moreover on reaching the service station I had to wait for minimum half an hour to reach the service advisor and had to approach them instead of them approaching me. In past I had also sent some mails indicating my petty issues but there was no satisfactory action taken against the same. This mail is re

I agree with both these comments...Fiat ki niyat hi kharab hai! I feel like giving a really good shake to Mr Kapoor to wake him up. Tata Motors, their vendors and dealers ARE SCREWING FIAT BIG TIME! And I say this with pain in my heart - Fiat, I love your cars but not your policies which even a moron would find inexplicable. Break your marriage with Tata, else you are doomed...I offer ten hours a week FREE to do whatever work you give me, preferably talking hesitant customers into buying your cars!! Doc

these statements like fiat thinking of growing coming from the CEO of a company like FIAT just goes on to show how laid back they are. when they could have made a killing by coming up with a better engine in the punto - they retained the old gearbox and made a car 50,000 more expensive with hardly anything to boast of. have been constantly trying to get some information from the CEO corner regarding the punto sport's launch prospects. always got one line answer. "nothing is sure as of now, but it might happen in second half of the year." the expectation of the company is that the customer like them should wait indefinitely for them to wake up, pull up their socks and start competing. if a company takes almost a year to launch a better performing punto, and goofs up with it it's difficult to gauge what they mean when they say "they think it's the right time to grow in india". the right time was yesterday. now it's late. the image of the brand is anyways not a selling factor. atleast

I totally agree with Samyak. moreover Mr. CEO is saying their spare parts are available easily .. haha We customoer only know how they manages parts from here an there. trust me guys. i need to co-ordinate from three cities to get spares. Only problem with me is i am FIAT fan. owned every car from them. but this step . of uniting with TATA specially for service & even after 15 months they didn;t started to set up thier own dedicated service centre is ridiculous step. Their is never a feel of satisfaction & confidence from TATA service. each time i need to launch a formal complaint, than they will recall car saying sorry .huh.. why this complications. Why its not as simple as, like giving them keys, have a peace time in office. & evening get car back with full satisfaction. But instead its like. go their. wait there for 20 mins to 30 mins to get service manager to come to u. as he is already busy in taking taxi indicas & neta's safaris. than make him understand whats ur problem e
