“What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.
The 918 Spyder, of which only 918 units will be made, brings an innovative drive train system to the table. It has a conventional 3.4L 500hp V8 as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 horsepower (160 kW). All of this results in some breathtaking numbers. For example, it is planned to provide an emission level of just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer and fuel consumption of only three liters/100 kilometers, which is truly outstanding, even for an ultra-compact city car. This car, however, is intended to offer the performance of a super sports car with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph).
Moreover, Porsche is breaking yet more new ground as the technology demonstrator with solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting “top pipes” exhaust system.
In the process, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future.
