Premier Rio 1.2 Petrol review - Blame it on rio!
This is the cheapest crossover SUV you can buy in India. But should you?

Motoring enthusiasts love rear wheel driven cars. It doesn’t matter whether you can hold a powerslide endlessly; the thought that a car can lash its tail out of line on demand is of immense pleasure to any dyed-in-the-wool motoring enthusiast. The Rio is rear-wheel driven and we drove it rather a lot in the dirt. Verdict? It is a lot of fun to drive! But wait, there’s more to this car than some silly young motoring scribe’s fascination for donuts. Why, when we’ve already driven the Rio before, are we driving it again? Because this one has a petrol motor under the hood.

WHY PETROL?

Introducing a petrol motor to an SUV in times of such incredulous fuel price hikes is sheer blasphemy, right? Well, Premier’s move is more ‘here and now’ than reeking of foresight. It’s simple. The TUD5 that has so far powered the Rio is a BS3 diesel, which cannot be sold in metros. Which means the Rio remained inaccessible to a large number of Premier’s target audience, the urban commuter with a fondness for regularly venturing into the rough. And the BS4 1.2 petrol motor has an important role to play here.

Premier seems to have done with the Rio what Ford may not be able to do with their Ecostar-avail of the sub 4m excise sop. I also read that Premier was in talks with Fiat for using its 1.3 multijet diesel motor in this vehicle. That would make it a very interesting car. As for inexpensive and friction loss free traction on mild offroad conditions, I had submitted a project on simple diff-locks at spark the rise. Here’s the link. http://www.sparktherise.com/projectdetail.php?pid=2412. Do propose it to premier. They might like the idea as the Rio is a rear wheel drive vehicle. Your article was lovely. I especially liked your use of the words, "dyed in in the wool", way to go!! Happy motoring!!

I have just returned from Premier Plant at Chinchwad, Pune which is the only place you can see, test, buy and service your RiO, at least for now, if you are a Pune citizen! I have just two NEWS to share for all the ‘something different’ lovers – 1. The attendance of your requirements is pathetic even before you BUY any product, i.e. at the marketing level so to say; despite of the sincere efforts of the miserably under-qualified, entirely inappropriate and most untrained ‘reception personnel’ I ever met in my life. No to mention the level of disappointment you go through against the anticipations and aspirations. 2. The ‘Face-lifted’ version (I am looking for Petrol GLX model) is NOT available and the poor uninformed guy had no idea whatsoever about the waiting time for it. No responsible or accountable person was found in the vicinity who can answer the queries or facilitate the buying decision. The pictures are all good but where’s the real thing…? It’s not a Fe

Incredibly stupid car! Who in his right mind would buy a slow, cheap, unsafe Chinese runabout which looks like a wart!

I think of it as an SUV. Going by the Bolero's success, it should have quite a market, especially at these prices. If only they could link up with Tata or somebody for aftersales, it could do well. I thought a redesign was due though.

This car was raped in a review on Team BHP. The photos suggested no different. The cheap plastics and the lack of quality were evident, and seemed to suggest Premier was taking the Indian junta for a ride. Was surprised to see BSM carrying this article! Don't get me wrong; I come to BSM more than any other site for motoring news.
