Nissan India has unveiled their low-cost Datsun brand for the Indian market. The Datsun brand is quite famous worldwide and is synonymous with low-cost, durable and practical cars. This is the first time the Datsun brand has come to Indian shores and there is talk of two products coming in 2014.
The first product will be a A-Star/Alto-competitor and the other car is expected to be a Santro/Wagon-R-like tall-boy hatch. Both these products will be priced under Rs 4 lakhs, placed below the Nissan car portfolio. Speaking at the launch of the Nissan brand, Mr Ashwani Gupta, Program Director, Datsun Business Unit, said that by 2016, 50% of all Nissans sold in India will be badged a Datsun. The Datsun brand will target used cars buyers and two-wheeler owners looking for budget cars and the Datsun brand promises to attract them with lightweight, durable, practical and affordable cars.
At the moment, we do not know if Datsun will have separate showrooms or dedicated ones in the three key markets – India, Indonesia and Russia. Each market will get their own unique Datsun products. With production hiked from two lakhs units to four lakhs units at their plant, this capacity would suffice for the initial batch of Datsuns.
