Yes, before you ask, the new Touareg does look a bit like a Passat on stilts – it’s those ‘family-resemblance’ headlamps again. Still, that’s not all that there is to this SUV, so here’s a quick run-through of what it’s got (and what it doesn’t).
Volkswagen is pretty big on keeping the familial theme going, which isn’t always a good thing in terms of product identification; in the case of this Touareg, however, I have to say that its styling works. It looks sharper, sportier and more aggressive than the old one, and its road presence has gone up appreciably, which should help its case against the competition. The rear end does look very similar to the Porsche Cayenne, but since both SUVs have a common platform, that’s perhaps not surprising. The Touareg is also longer and wider than the older car, giving it more interior room; ground clearance has come down a bit, but with the height-adjustable suspension, that really isn’t an issue.
