Mercedes-Benz India have launched its luxury seven seat crossover, the R-Class at a price of Rs 58.79 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai. Filling in a niche, the R-Class is the first of its kind in the country in a luxury segment that is bursting at its seams and a market that is able to consume anything thrown at it.
In India the R-Class is available in the R350 4Matic guise only for the moment. Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine that is also found on cars like the S-Class and E-Class, the engine produces 272 bhp@6000 rpm and a healthy 35.5 kgm of peak torque from 2400 to 5000 rpm. This enables the R350 to accelerate from 0-100 kph in 8.4 seconds and goes on to a top speed 230 kph. Mated to the 7G-Tronic transmission, the R-Class should have a decent combination of performance and refinement.
The car is loaded with features such as bi-xenon headlamps, steel spring suspensions at the front and AIRMATIC self-levelling suspension at the rear. A six-disc audio unit with DVD player and wireless speakers, leather interiors, auto climate control, PRESAFE safety system among others are part of the standard equipment. The car rides on 18-inch alloys.
First launched at the 2010 New York International Motor Show, this new generation car is sold in India as a CBU.
