Yes, folks, that’s the new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. Yeah, take it in for a minute, let it sink in, throw away all the cutesy mental pictures you have of the earlier Beetles and get ready to program in a whole new Beetle into your world. Gone are the cutesy curvy lines of the earlier Beetles, and here we have a whole new design with more masculine lines than ever before. It sort-of comes across as Dodge idea of a Beetle, doesn’t it?
Still, ignoring the fact that more than half the Beetle fan club is going to be up in arms, it’s not exactly bad looking. You won’t go all coochie-coo looking at it, but that’s the point you see – most guys would think twice about getting the last-generation Beetle, owing to the softer, more feminine appeal but this, they might just end up buying one. Would you? In Volkswagen’s defence, the fact remains that whatever you do with such an iconic design, there are going to be people unsatisfied with it.
As expected, LEDs have cropped up inside the bi-xenon headlamps, it’s grown in size all around – wider, taller and longer - while the interiors have been updated significantly. Engines options include a 197 BHP TSI motor which can wind the speed up to a claimed 225 kph. Now that’s quite fast! Of course, you will have a raft of petrol and diesel-engines to choose from. Other significant changes include 19-inch wheels, 12 different colours, a Sport version, a panoramic glass roof to get more than a bit of sunshine into the car, a music system by Fender (Hendrix, Clapton…yeah that Fender), BlueMotion technology to keep the carbon emissions in check and a bigger boot.
Coming to the Asian region in February 2012, according to Volkswagen.
The BSM office is still undecided on the looks front. It will just take time I guess.
