The other advantage of the new platform is the new suspension setup. An L-shaped unit at the front, with its own sub-frame, replaces the pure McPherson units. What this has done is make the ride more pliant and less susceptible to vertical motion. It also makes the car better tied down and allows for better weight distribution across the front wheels. Placing a new steering unit above the front axle, the car turns in with more positivity, less body roll and more grip. Thanks to the 165 section 14-inch tyres, there is more lateral grip and with the tyres being 65 per cent of the profile, there is less  bobbing too. The steering on the Wagon R provides more feedback and better feel of the road. To be honest, it behaves so much like the Suzuki Ritz on the road now that one can hardly make out the difference between the two.

This can only be a good thing as long as potential buyers don't switch sides. But even if they do, Maruti wouldn't mind, because right now they are running at 125 per cent of their capacity in one plant and the other is also getting there rather soon. So despite increased competition, Maruti is holding its head high and sailing past them all. With the new Wagon R, they can stamp their authority even further, even though there won't be a Duo version to begin with (which contributes nearly a quarter of all Wagon R sales).

The new Wagon R with its bevy of features and sound engineering, looks like a sure-shot winner. And those who buy one can now stop worrying about small potholes.

Maruti has revealed the pricing for the new Wagon R as follows

LX: Rs 3.28lakhs

LXi: Rs 3.57lakhs

VXi: Rs 3.81lakhs

VXi (ABS + Airbags): Rs 4.12lakhs

All prices ex-showroom, Delhi.

@Tathagata, only the model name is 12 years old, everything else is different. Everything - Suspension, Engine, Gear shift technology and much more. Infact it is a whole new platform. Thanks to such journalists millions of indians are able to choose a car. If the review ferari and lamborginis only, i think hardly anyone will be benefited.

Been thinking of exchanging my Alto Lxi with the New Wagon R BS IV Vxi and have been going thru' articles and reviews on the Vxi variant of the new Wagon R. I personally took a Test Drive last week and I was overwhelmed by the great changes the New Wagon R has got. I was thinking of going in for Swift, but looking at the interiors I was surprised that it has become more spacy with lot of legroom and dashboard with the Integrated Music system gives that glitzy look. People has their own ideas. Some criticise the New Wagon R, but for me it has come as a Messiah. thanks.

This happens only in India. Car manufacturers apply some cosmetics to a 12 year old car and you have motoring journalists reviewing it like the latest Ferrari praising the "new headlamps" the "updated gear knob" and the "new design fabric on the seats". Bravo. I have no doubt that Wagon-R is a very practical, dependable & fuel-efficient car. I am sure it will sell in good numbers and i have tremendous respect for middle class Indians who slog no end to be able to afford a car like this. But to the journalist-Do you really feel you should be reviewing a 12 year old car with cosmetic changes to influence people to go buy this car? If the automotive journalists don't denounce PLC (Product Life Cycle)down products, who will? India is perhaps the only major car market in the world where manufacturers dare to push outdated products to the public. But, you know what, as long as you continue writing reviews for 12 year old platforms praising the "new rear view mirrors", Indian consum

I own a Wagon R from 2005. The cars a very practical car for a city like Mumbai with bumper traffic. In most cities where we mover from one signal to the next torque to zip out fast is most critical. We have driven the car to Daman and Goa. Its gives very good road visibility due to large windows, good ac, carries all our luggage and shopping and easy to get in and get out including weaving traffic. We are very happy with our car and even after 5 years dont feel like selling it due to its practical value. Another interesting finding is that on our way to Goa we found max Wagon R families on the move. Somewhere I feel the practicality of the vehicle gives the necessary confidence to travel long distances among Wagon R owners. Throw in the luggage, get the kids in, strp your wife in put the music on fill a tank full and you get to go around 432 kms on a Rs 1400 of Petrol with ac. Now thats a practical car.

ford figo and chevy beat are the only two cars that can be called safe and sturdy , maruti im sorrry to say uve fooled people long enough no more hoodwinking is required as quality cars are available now only a fool would buy this car and gamble with his wife's or child's life and all those who say maruit is cheap to maintain try getting the ac compressor job done the suspension is too weak these cars when stretched beyond4 years will show what they are truly worth especially in countryside roads those who live in cities simply dont know the actual roads india has

C'mmon dude i had wagon r for last five years and i week back i exchanged my old wagon r with the new one. If you are getting all the required features in wagon r which is 3.38 lakhs its money waste to buy other cars which are costly. I had no problem with wagon r which you mentioned earlier.Wagon R is one of the best cars by Maruthi

could have been better if suzuki brought the jappanese version, people are ready to accept bold designs these days and original does sell well (like swift, ritz, polo, punto, beat etc.) cosmetic changes may not do justice in the long run and suzuki could have saved the 250 crore or so it spend on indianisation of WagonR, Interior plastic quality is not upto the mark. the worst part with all the new suzuki models are the terrible lack of pactically usable boot space.

Things like ABS and Airbags are STANDARD EQUIPMENT on cars the world over.. By offering these as "options", Maruti is treating the safety of its customers as an "option". Pathetic!!

Well guys,I too love beautiful cars which means that the Punto or the Polo are the only two sensible choices, with the Figo almost there...but most people will always buy cars for the value-for-money part and I'm afraid that this Wagon is going to sell like hot cakes...take it or leave it! Doc

I had wagon R (2005) for about year and half from 2005 to mid 2007, clocked around 48,000 km and had to exchange it for swift diesel, but I still love the wagon R as I had her besides me in probably in all possible road conditions in India, city, brocken roads, mud roads, hilly roads. It gave me good company when I was posted in Munnar for an year, Many times it carried loads its not supposed to, including six adults all the way from Mookambica to Kasaragode ? I played split seats with it utilising the flexibilty it offered, four split seats, Twice slept entire night with A/C kept on, carried bicycles, groceries, furniture and every other thing possible with three seats turned down, even after all these it gave me averages of 17 km/l on tank fulls. Only sore point is her soft suspensions causing her sway and role on the western ghat roads, it was difficult to part with her, only the rising fuel prices that had curtailed my association with her as I cloack nearly 3000 km every month, Ev

Hi BSM, Wagon R was one of the most ugly looking cars in the market and this new Wagon R looks even more pathetic. It looks so dated and I think the designers of this cars were first timers. Maruti says that they have spent 290 crores on its development. I think they should better have copied bits from other small hatches which are sold overseas. Cars from Alfa romeo, Fiat are so handsome. If u cant design it yourself atleast take some inspiration from other cars.

Reading this review, one will feel that outgoing WagonR is a piece of crap. But last year same experts rated old WagonR as the best car in its category and million year old 1.1L engine was the best performing. Though WagonR was more prone to accidents from day ONE. Please make up your mind?

Sorry Rohin, but the WagonR is not in the same league as any of the new generation models. Maruti's have an inherent cheapness to them. Every panel, plastic feels and looks cheap. I've no idea why you glorify every car they launch. It's sick to see BSM to suck up to Maruti time and again. Pathetic.

We all know ne problem in 1.0 k series engine in which low end torques is missing in a-star or estilo and review says that pposite to this.In fact in new wagon r it will struggle to move as it is heavier than a-star and estilo.Further wagonr has become roomier? Is it so? Only leg space is increased by 4cm.do we require really that extra headroom?widhwise it has not increased

I am dissapointed by new wagon r since engine is 3 cylinder still in that sum of money i am considering a ford figo as 5 people can sit in ford figo but not even in new wagon r, interior is same only cosmetic changes are there on dash board and new body is like hippopotamus does not suit a small car like wagon r so i waited for 2 months for new waqon r but my former decision to buy ford figo is best bye folks i am going to buy ford figo, since i cannot spend my hard earned 4.3 lakhs on garbage box weak engine, impractical NEW WAGON R, USELESS CAR

Mr.A.Singh - what are you trying to say by stating the WagonR 'was more prone to accidents'? And what does that lead us to? Accidents are caused by inattentive driving, period. Are you trying to say that if my middle aged father wants to go supermarketing, he'd rather consider switching to a Volvo FH12 because it is less prone to accidents? Or a washing machine, perhaps? Please make up your mind, Sir. And Arora saahab, make up Your mind too. You want a sub 4 lakh rupee car so you can take it to the 'Ring? If no, then you must note that Maruti has priced the new WagonR rather well, and made it better, much better than its predecessor. 130kmph is irrelevant. And that the outgoing WagonR was rather uncivilized in its ways is no secret.

I feel review in TEAM-BHP is more balanced, unbiased and realistic. Suzuki has only one engine, which is BS-IV compliant, 3 cyl or 4 cyl. 3 cyl engine is always unbalanced and noisy.

Rubbish when compared to the Chevvy Beat. I am pretty dissapointed with the review. A 1.0 litre engine with 67 bhp, kerb weight of almost 900 kgs and the aerodynamics that would make a brick swell with pride and it goes on to hit 130 kmph easily!!!!! I mean come on guys, tell us that you have been paid to be nice.
