If you happened to read the Mahindra XUV500’s road test, you will probably be dying to know how it stacks up against its competition. Competition, you ask? Well, it comes in three forms – the original keeper of the flame, the Tata Aria, the very capable Skoda Yeti and a third that was originally intended to flank the former two, the Force One. We did manage to drive the Force One for a limited distance and so you can find our impressions in a box on the next page. Right now though, we shall focus our energies on the Aria and Yeti.

PRACTICALITY

Since looks are subjective (and yes, it always leaves a certain section fuming), let’s go straight to how are they to live with. The Yeti is probably the best built, feels quite solid and can give many upmarket, large SUVs a run for their money. Its compact dimensions, wide stance, clever seating possibilites and top notch build quality make you appreciate it once again in this company. What’s not practical is that darn clutch, which makes stalling as often an occurence as a burp.

Yeti should be compared to fabia instead of XUV or aria. Its way to small to be called a SUV. At 4.2m its just ahead of fabia (4.0 m) in length, far behind aria (4.8 m) and xuv (4.6 m). further, ppl hv now begin to realise that skoda is not a premium brand, after their entry into mass mkt. So that skoda factor also wont work. XUV rocks

I have driven both Aria & XYV500.. Tata has to work lot on built quality & ruggedness. Aria is too overpriced for the package..

Perhaps a V2 for XUV would be worth waiting if the time span between Aria 4x4 and 4x2 is to be reckoned with. Nevertheless, XUV seems a good corssover between CAR and SUV for a remarkable price !

Aria is a fabulous cross over with great features, one should really drive all these 3 Crossovers off road beyond 150km speed and comment on the comfort, refinement, drive ability and overall performance, most of the people booked XUV blindly many have booked without seeing vehicle, it's just an hypo created by M&M lets wait and watch

Yeti still make sense...q is what the hell aria is doing...it's not even crossover let alone suv...completely pointless!

I wish Skoda would shed some more light on its plans for the Yeti (in terms of other engine/gearbox options). I am still waiting with hope for Yeti with a DSG gearbox, which was mentioned at the time the Yeti was launched in India 2 years ago....but sadly it hasnt shown up yet.

First thought - what is Yeti doing here, second thought - OK they are after all crossovers with roughly the same displacement, power and price bracket. Things that are different are their construction type which makes them behave differently. Wonder what Mahindra will do next; mini Scorpio with same construction principle and engine as XUV to stand against Yeti.
