When it comes to flagship cars, the Germans are where it’s at. People pick up an S-Class, 7 Series or an A8 by default. Nothing wrong with that, of course, considering Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi put whatever they’ve got into making these magnificent machines. You can’t go wrong with these models and it boils down to which German brand you’d like to be seen with. Those who have the money and would like to think differently can now think of getting themselves a Porsche Panamera or a Maserati Quattroporte, but these are still at the fringe.
And between the two is exactly where the new Jaguar XJ fits in – it’s not as sterile as the German competition or as flamboyant as the Italian, but it is indeed special. Special inside-out, because you can see that Jaguar has tried hard to make it a different product compared to the competition. Now being different may not be enough to bring in the money, but what the hell... If you are going to fit the hallowed badge on a car, then the car better deserve it. So does the XJ deserve it?
