Hyundai may be the only small car company to have not created a buzz while others, including Maruti Suzuki have either launched or are launching more new small cars. But it is interested in turning things around.
The buzz is that Hyundai is looking at launching more versions of its i20 1.2 to take on the challenge posed by the VW Polo, Ford Figo, Maruti's new Swift 1.2 and other B-segment hatches. It currently is available only in the Magna and Asta trims, but like its i10 cousin could potentially even have the Era and Sportz trims.
The Era will sport 175/70 R14 tyres with wheelcaps, a chrome grille, central locking with immobliser, rear fog lamps and body coloured bumpers. On the inside the car might have power windows for the front only, a non-adjustable (for rake and reach) steering wheel and provisions for speakers and tweeters.
The Sportz variant that would be slotted between the Magna and Asta variants would have a driver airbag along with remote entry and turn indicators on the outside mirrors. A passenger vanity mirror, electrically adjustable rear view mirrors and a stereo with steering remote would be part of the package, over and above the features available on the Magna.
The new variants promise to be keenly priced. Considering ex-showroom Mumbai prices, the i20 Era could start at Rs 4.6 lakh with the current Magna priced at Rs 5.13 lakh. The Sportz could be priced for Rs 5.5 lakh where the Asta is currently priced at Rs 5.98 lakh. Here is a list of the current prices of the car in Mumbai for all variants and versions:
