Not to be left behind in the compact SUV space, Honda is now ready to reveal its concept at Detroit. The Urban SUV will be front-wheel driven and may also be offered with an all-wheel drive version with real-time all-wheel drive.
With design and styling to mimic that of its larger cousin, the CR-V, Honda's urban SUV will not only be sold in developed nations but in emerging markets like India where the compact SUV space has really taken off. Rivals like Renault already offer the successful Duster and Ford is readying itself for the launch of the EcoSport in the coming months. Suzuki is keen to enter the segment too and could offer its production version of the XA Alpha concept, first seen at the 2012 Auto Expo before the end of 2013. Korean car manufacturer Hyundai too is known to be viewing this space closely and Renault's partner Nissan is expected to get its version of the Duster too.
The Urban SUV is likely to be powered by a pair of engines in international markets, according to our friends at IndianAutosBlog. This may include the 1.6-litre EarthDreams diesel motor and a 1.8-litre, i-VTEC petrol. The Indian market will get the 1.5-litre version of the EarthDreams motor and possibly a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, though the latter is pure speculation at the moment. The Urban SUV is likely to measure under 4-metres for the Indian market to help it gain excise duty benefits and will be heavily localised to keep prices competitive. A launch date prior to 2015 is likely.
