Honda has launched, what is its cheapest car in India. The Brio hatchback, designed to take on the likes of the Hyundai i10 and Chevrolet Beat has been unveiled in New Delhi today, at a price of Rs 3.95 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi

The Brio is Honda's smallest car in its lineup. With high levels of localisation, Honda has managed to keep the price of the Brio at competitive levels. Here are the prices of the four variants, all ex-showroom, Delhi:

Honda Brio E - Rs 3.95 lakh
Honda Brio S - Rs 4.35 lakh
Honda Brio S Option - Rs 4.9 lakh
Honda Brio V - Rs 5.1 lakh

The Brio will come in six colour options and in the four trim levels mentioned above. Powering the Brio is the familiar 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol motor found on the Jazz, with identical power and torque figures of 88 bhp and 11.1 kgm.

The Brio S Option and V will come with ABS and airbags as standard as well as a USB/aux-in audio system with controls on the steering. The V in addition to all these comes with alloy wheels, fog lamps and a slightly different seat trim. The E and S will not come with these safety features, but will be well-loaded nevertheless.

While it is certainly a nice car, the one factor which hangs like a cloud over its fortunes is the ever escalating price of petrol...while people can be reasonably sure that diesel will continue to bear heavy subsidies no matter how high the price of crude reaches internationally, petrol will enjoy no such luxuries...already the cost per km of petrol is sky high compared to diesel...with this trend of increasing petrol but stable diesel prices(thanks to subsidies), it looks like the running cost of this lovely little car will be far higher than that of a small diesel. Sad to see this artificial distortion.

A sensibly priced Honda, no doubt it will sell.

NO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION It will be rewarding if Honda can add CVT/automatic as an option since it will compete well with Hyundai i-10. Otherwise i-10 will remain as the king.
