Hyundai added two exciting variants to its good-looking hatchback today: the 1.4 CRDi and the 1.4 petrol. The new diesel motor develops 88.7 bhp@4000 rpm and a peak torque of 22.4 kgm@1750-2750 rpm. And the Korean carmaker promises 20 km to the litre with the diesel i20. The other version is a new 1.4 petrol motor developing 98 bhp@5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 13.9 kgm@4200 rpm. Importantly, the 1.4 petrol comes with an automatic transmission.

Prices are as follows:

1.4 CRDI Magna - Rs 6.19 lakh
1.4 CRDI Asta - Rs 6.83 lakh
1.4 CRDI Asta with options - Rs 7.20 lakh

1.4 Petrol automatic - Rs 7.31 lakh
1.4 Petrol automatic with all options - Rs 7.72 lakh

(All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi. Options package includes six airbags and a sunroof)

Diesel prices are introductory, while the petrol 1.4 will not be available with a manual option for now.

As expected, Hyundai was awaiting the launch of the Honda Jazz to introduce the two new i20s. With the introduction of these two i20s, Hyundai has covered all bases with its big hatchback which has done surprisingly well in the marketplace.

The diesel i20 will sway people not only from the 1.3 Multijet powered Suzuki Swift and Fiat Grande Punto with 75 bhp and nearly 19.1 kgm of torque, it will also take away some marketshare from cars like the Suzuki Swift Dzire.

The 1.4 petrol on the other hand will take on the Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 petrol and Honda Jazz and will be the most powerful out of the trio.

HMIL is also the first manufacturer in India which has produced a car, the i20 which was awarded the 5 Star Euro NCAP rating recently.
