Ford India's next big bet is running a bit late, but now there is a launch month to it. The company is looking to launch the vehicle in June, as it hopes to make it its second largest selling product by volume after the Figo.
The EcoSport will be launched with three engine options; a 1.0-litre, 120 hp EcoBoost petrol, the 1.5-litre Duratec Motor from the Fiesta with 107 bhp and a 1.5-litre Duratorq diesel motor with 89 bhp. The 1.5-litre petrol motor will come with a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission that is also offered on the Fiesta saloon. It's quite likely that the 1.5-litre petrol will come with just this transmission option, though it's likely to fall in the 27 per cent excise duty category instead of the 12 per cent category that the other two powertrain options will fall under. The other two will come with manual transmissions only, thus the opening for a small diesel SUV with an automatic transmission under the Mahindra Scorpio will continue to exist.
The EcoSport measures in at under 4 metres and has a ground clearance of 200 mm. The vehicle is built on the same B-platform on which the Fiesta saloon is housed. To be offered in just front-wheel drive format for the moment, Ford isn't committing on a timeline for the all-wheel drive variant just yet.
Ford has begun buzz around the EcoSport with their EcoSport Discoveries Drive Campaign that will spread across 12 cities in India over the next three months. Winners of the competition will be part of a unique drive that will take place in May. Ford India hasn't committed to the opening of bookings just yet, but we expect that to open in May, with the launch and deliveries in June.
