For the second time in a row, Sebastian Vettel took pole position. After starting the season opener at Bahrain on pole, Vettel has also claimed pole at Melbourne, the second race of the season. Vettel's Red Bull Racing team-mate, Mark Webber will start alongside him on the front row of the grid. The two drivers managed to dominate the qualifying session, taking a lead early on.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso came closest to the Red Bull duo, and managed a time that was two-tenths off Vettel's pace, and managed to take third place on the grid. The rest of the pack however, was six-tenths off the pace of pole man. Button qualified fourth, with Massa in fifth.
Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher struggled on the soft compound tyres and qualified sixth and seventh. Barrichello, Kubica and Sutil completed the top 10, with 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton down in eleventh place.
Karun Chandhok will start the race from 24th on the grid, just behind Hispania Racing team-mate, Bruno Senna.
