1. The Chevrolet Beat diesel is the first GM hatch to sport a diesel motor, anywhere in the world. Essentially a three-cylinder version of the 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet motor, this 937cc engine has been developed by both GM Tech India and GM Powertrain Europe.

2. GM got access to the Multijet diesel as it helped co-develop it with Fiat over a decade ago when GM owned a significant stake in the Italian car manufacturer.

3. The diesel engine for the Beat is produced right here in India at GM's engine facility at Chakan, which also assembles the Beat.

4. The engine produces about 57.8 bhp of peak power and 15.2 kgm of peak torque. These figures make it the least powerful common-rail diesel engine on a passenger car in India, by far, while also being the smallest common-rail diesel engine on a passenger car in India.

5. GM have worked hard to make the engine torquey and driveable as well as fuel-efficient and with low NVH levels. The car sports a DOHC, 12-valve setup and has hydraulic lash adjusters. There have also been improvements to the gearbox to make it slicker shifting.

I own this car got it on 11-11-11. Is a dream to drive in the city has enough power and is light and nimble that lower hp is compensated. Better City performance than my friends Figo. Getting 15-16 kmpl in city and 21kmpl on highway doing 110-120. Great interiors Would have preffered a bigger engine if option given but this is still good

I am proud owner of chevrolet beat since Nov 2011.The car is really value for money. The engine performs quite opposite to what is written in papers it is rather very peppy and pick up is very good(except with AC sometimes). In city the car is perfect all i can say.In highways soo many people say that it is not a good sprinter but my experience was totally different where i drove constantly btw 120-135 kmph and the performance is way out of the mark.At last I am very happy with my chevy's performance till date.

Thanks a lot for your good comments. I am planning to buy a Beat diesel base model. Please do let me know about the car engine and after sale service. Like service and cost of spares.

This is a car under the segment called City cars. Figo, Indica, Swift i20 are all small cars. City cars are smaller than small cars. i10, santro, spark, beat, alto all come under city car classification. try "city cars" in wiki.

On the Beat website they are showing PS/l and Nm/l instead of PS@...rpm and Nm@...rpm.So dont get fooled. The fact is Swift,Ritz,Figo etc are more powerful than the former.

Fuel efficiency test not done at all? What a review us this? You guys are so critical of Indica eV2 when ARAI certified 25Kmpl...now when Beat has come up with 24Kmpl, you guys not even try to test it? So lazy? or so biased????

This car would be the "Maruti 800" of the diesels... in terms of performance. Why is GM aiming it at the Figo? It is no match for the Figo or any of the 1.3 Multijet cars, especially on cross-country runs where all speedsters are diesels. Like many here noted, it makes poor business sense unless GM prices it starting at 4 lacs. Like Raihan said, this engine should've been in the Spark!

I just drove it yesterday and liked it. gear shift is much smoother than petrol version. noise free car. i own a Beat LS, petrol and Now I am going for Beat Diesel and i have already booked it. Expected date of delivery 27th July. As promised by Speed Chevrolet. Beat is a superb machine. I hope Beat diesel will also keep my faith over GM

What happened to Tavera? No updates yet? Even silly xylo and manza are selling like hot cakes Then why no MUV from GM?
Posted by Sayeed at 18th July,2011
Why is GM-Chevrolet not coming out with a diesel on the new UVA which has been launched in Europe with Petrol. That would be the ideal competitor to the likes of Figo, Indica, i20, micra and would sell well. The Beat Diesel will be a competitor only to the Indica and Ritz in the segment due to the boot space.

WOW finally a great looking diesel is going to be a dream come true for India. I personally feel that in India 90 - 100 kmph is a good speed to attain even on Highways and should be sufficient for 99% of the people also the torque value gives a good confidence that it will be much better than the petrol beat for sure even at higher speeds.

If the chevy team wants to lead the diesel market in small segment then the price of the Beat(D) should be around 4 lac. Otherwise everybody wants to go for other options.

I own a chevoelet beat LT since january last year. from the day i have purchsed the car i have been facing problems with AC, Gear box and the mileage is only 10 KM /litre even when the company claim it to be 18.5 KM/litre. The Service of GM service stations are pathetic . I will warn every one to beware and wait for atleast 6 months to check the car.

I have test driven Beat diesel. It is amazing. I didnot expect such a good pick up from diesel variant. The petrol version was very slow on pick up but diesel engine is superb with neglible sound inside and good auto ac. with expected price of less than 5 lacs this is the best as compared to all other cars in this segment. The torque 160 is more than swift ,ritz, ford figo and i10.Milage as per ARAI 24 km/l. What else you need guys

Given the nature of this engine's performance and the space availability inside the cabin, if GM position this car to take on the Ford Figo and price it upwards of Rs 4.5 Lakh for the base version, then they will certainly loose the plot. This car's starting price should be under 4 Lakh for the base variant which would create a separate segment instead, for this car.

Whatver happend to the Santro/i-10 diesel???
  Posted by Shaiju B at 13th July,2011
If GM is going to price the beat similar to Figo or Swift then whats the point of developing a smaller engine, they should have gone with the 1.3 lit engine itself. The mail reason would be to reduce the price or other could be, Beat doesnt have enough space to accomodate the 1.3lit engine.

With the engine performance and torque mentioned in the article here, their best bet for this specs is to look at 3.90 to 4.80 lacs! This would really shake the market from Figo to eV2, and give Beat an edge over the next launches like New Swift & Brio(rumored to be under 4 lacs). This is GM's chance to make a mark in India. We'lkl wait and watch.

GM is definately a very reliable brand all over the world but if they have to produce Beat D in volumes then they have to price it below the 4L barrier and if they are able to provide a Beat D under 4L on road it would be a major hit on road.
Posted by drpullockaran at 12th July,2011
With the price of the Honda Jazz being reduced by 1 and 3/4 lakh rupees its highly unlikely that the Beat can sell well if its base version is priced above 4 lakhs, even if it seeps diesel fuel. Every single hatchback manufacturer in India will feel the heat if the Jazz continues to be sold at the rates announced today.

hi GM guys bring in a auto box to go with the diesel pot with no frills to fully loaded in 3 variants and you will have the first mover advantage and go to catch the ladies who find it very difficult to manage this crazy traffic.

wrong engine on the wrong car, this engine should be on the Spark
