The 911. Same as the last car. Which was same as the previous one. Especially as far as the basic design, engine placement and engineering ethos goes. But every subsequent generation becomes larger, more mature and a Porsche that some would like to call, 'better'.
The new 991-911, successor to the outgoing 997 is out and we have the first official details and pictures on it. Yes, it's larger than before – the wheelbase by some 100 mm while it sits lower which helps the car in its 'better than before' coefficient of drag. It's also lighter, something most new generation cars are being forced to become. This one has been on a diet and lost 45 kg in the process. On the other hand, wheel sizes now go up to 20-inches, though there's only the regular Carrera and Carrera S that will go on sale right away.

Oh, so you are wondering why we haven't said much about the looks yet. Okay, so here's the deal. It's got new, oriental looking LED DRLs, larger headlamps, a larger frontal area and a very smartly designed exterior, especially those eyelash-like tail lamps. On the inside, the switchgear is somewhat new and there's lots of Cayenne/Panamera inspiration in there, though all-in-all it's quality stuff.
Under the hood, er, in this case the rear is a 3.4-litre 350 bhp boxer-six on the regular Carrera and a 3.8-litre 400 bhp boxer-six once again on the Carrera S. The standard Carrera and the S has an optional PDK gearbox apart form a new, world-first, seven-speed manual. The Carrera's fuel consumption stands at 8.2 l/100 km (an improvement of 16 per cent) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and has a CO2 rating of 194 g/km. The S on the other hand has a 8.7 l/100 km (improvement of 14 per cent) and 205 g/km CO2 rating.
The S can now accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 4.3 secs with PDK which comes down to 4.1 secs with the Sports Chrono pack. The Carrera has a 0-100 kph time of 4.6 secs which is 4.4 secs with the Sports Chrono pack.
More mechanical changes include the use of Start-Stop as well as an electromechanical steering for the first time on the 911 as Porsche aims to reduce its overall CO2 rating. The car also gets thermal management and brake energy recuperation system.
The new 911 has a wider front and rear track to improve stability and traction. PDCC or Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control is offered on the 911 with a new roll stabilisation on the Carrera S.
Expect the new 991-911 to hit Indian roads in the first-half of 2012.
