We are in the Rs 9-12 lakh league now and the badge of the car matters here. Skoda stands for quality, economical cars in India thanks to the scores of diesel powered Octavias that they sold in the country over the years. Chevrolet cannot say that they enjoy the same badge pull, but the Optra, in its diesel Magnum form has carved a niche for itself. It has got the presence, space and the economy of the Skoda and is cheaper by almost two lakh! It rides well over bad roads and has more than decent performance for a diesel powered car too. The Octavia on the other hand oozes quality – from each nut and bolt and is therefore a more durable car. This reflects on the resale value too. Another negative that one can come up against the Octavia is the fact that there already exists a new Octavia in the market (we know it as the Laura). But then that is way more expensive. We love the underdog that is the Optra Magnum and would recommend it over the Octavia based on the sticker price itself. Our choice: Optra Magnum.
