First, they got on to the four-door coupe game. Then, when they found nothing more to play with, they asked their tuning divisions to give them hotter, meaner versions. And the latest to join the bandwagon are Audi and BMW, both of whom are using the floors of Detroit to unveil their latest, mad incarnations.
Not far from the BMW section, where the M6 Gran Coupe has just gone through the song and dance routine, Audi have also just concluded theirs for the RS7. Essentially the fastest, most expensive iteration of the A7, the RS7 gets a brand new, 4.0-litre V8 as found on the S7, except with a twin-scroll turbo, cylinder deactivation tech and 560 bhp under the hood. That enables it to despatch the ton in just under 4 seconds and a top speed on the naughty side of 300 kph is in the offing. Drivers can also choose how loud they want their exhaust note to sound and then can make it louder by opting for the optional sports exhaust kit.
On the outside, the menacing bits; a huge air dam, large 20 or 21-inch wheels, the usual muscle-pumping design details and the LED daytime running lamps can be found. What can also be found is a line of keen drivers willing to find the first set of twisties to take the RS7 to. Count us in on it!
