For those who thought Ferrari was out of the reckoning in 2010, think again. Fernando Alonso's stunning performance behind the wheel at the Singapore Grand Prix means he's now within spitting distance of the world title with just four races to go. And Lewis Hamilton's dreams are looking increasingly dire as the hunt for the championship top post draws to a close.
Qualifying on Saturday on pole, with Sebastien Vettel and Lewis Hamilton close behind, Fernando Alonso began the race on Sunday taking the lead after the first corner. For the next thirty odd laps or so, the race went on with any untoward incident, until Lewis found himself involved in a tussle with Mark Webber. On lap 36 as Hamilton made his move on Webber who hesitated in overtaking Lotus' Lucas Di Grassi around turn six, the Briton made his way past the Australian only to find Webber on his tail around the next corner, braking a tad too late and into Lewis' McLaren. The race ended right then and there for the 2008 World Champion, while Webber headed back to the pits for a new nose.
Elsewhere, Alonso continued to extend his lead over Red Bull's Sebastien Vettel, while Webber came out in third place after the second round of pitstops were done with. Jenson Button eventually slipped from third to fourth and stayed there pretty much until the end of the race.
Force India, who had a poor qualifying session found their cars vaulting ahead, but Vitantonio Liuzzi was involved in a skirmish with Sauber returnee Nick Heidfeld and fellow team driver Adrian Sutil on lap two. Liuzzi retired right away while Sutil made his way up, finishing eighth. But FIA has ruled that Sutil managed to take undue advantage around a corner during the race and awarded him a 20 second penatly, relegating th German to tenth place. Force India has filed for an appeal regarding the decision.
