What is more desirable than a Mercedes-Benz SL roadster? Actually, a lot of things (most we can't mention for fear of the libel police cracking down on us), but let's just say 'a Mercedes-Benz SL given the once over by AMG'. Yes, the all-new SL itself has only just been unveiled to the world and now there's an AMG version of it too, aptly called the SL 65 AMG. Purists know what that badge means - Mental acceleration, earth shattering torque and numbers that will leave you sweating even if you're on the North Pole. In winter.
What the SL 65 AMG gets is a 5980cc V12 (what else?!) that produces 621 bhp@4800-5400 rpm and 102 kgm (you read that right) of peak torque starting as low as 2300 rpm. What makes all the impressive numbers even more so is that the SL 65 AMG is 170 kg lighter than the 'regular' SL! As a result, the roadster now has a 0-100 kph timing of 4 seconds with the electronically restricted top-speed (250 kph, sigh!) being the only party pooper.
Still, all that power won't go up in smoke thanks to a further tuned suspension based on the Active Body Control unit from the SL 63 AMG and it also gets a new electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering. In addition to that, there's a Bang & Olufsen high-end surround sound system to drown out the wind-blast and of course, a comprehensive options list. On the outside, the changes are minimal – a chromed grille, chrome accents on the gills and new wheels and a few more exhaust tips we suppose. The tyres are 255/35 R19 and 285/30 R 19 (front and rear), no doubt, to cope with all those numbers. Lastly, thanks to the weight savings the SL 65 AMG has a claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 11.6 l/100 km and a CO2 emissions rating of 270 g/km. Can't wait for this one to go on sale in the country, can you?
