  • The 300 SEL was an epic car. It's design is timeless and even in 1971, it came with a 6.8 L, 428 bhp, V8 motor capable of hitting 265 kph. A hundred came up in 4.2s, back in 1971! It proved to the entire world that the Stuttgart-based car-maker could easily overcome weight and dimension issues and build a very agile, fun-to-drive and fast sports saloon
  • The car was originally designed by AMG to race in FIA’s GT category and after a few modifications also ran at Le Mans in 1998. Mercedes finally decided to make some money from them and made 25 of these at their Affalterbach factory from the winter of 1998 to the summer of 1999. Only one of those 25 was made in RHD format, for the Sultan of Brunei (lucky chap)
  • Before AMG handed over their 7.3-litre unit to Pagani, they plonked it under the bonnet of one of these. On sale from 1999 – 2001, only 85 were ever made in AMG guise - with a rumoured 50 of them going straight, again to the Sultan of Brunei. And you couldn't just buy one off the shelf. You had to buy an SL600 roadster from Mercedes and then hand it over to AMG along with an additional $50,000
  • One of the most beautiful cars ever designed by Mercedes, the CLS got the AMG treatment in 2004. Powered by the same 469 bhp engine used in the E55, the CLS55 reached a tonne in 4.2s and went all the way up to 253kph. Looks to match a Maserati with none of its quirkiness. Brilliant!
  • On sale from 2008-2010, this was the first Mercedes car to be completely overhauled by AMG. Chassis, Engine, Brakes… the lot. Unlike most of its predecessors, this was designed to be a sports car. Under the hood was a 6.2 L, 450 bhp engine good for a 0-100 kph time of 4.5s. The chassis was drift happy, need I say more?
  • Cars do not get more intimidating than the SL65 Black. When launched, it was powered by a twin turbo-charged 6.0L 661 hp V12 engine. That’s 20hp more than the SLR 722 supercar. The 0-100 kph sprint came up in 3.9s with a top whack of 320 kph. Extensive use of carbon fibre ensured that it was 250 kilo’s lighter than the run of the mill SL65
  • Luxurious on the inside, mind bogglingly fast and old school in virtually every other way. That’s the G55 AMG for you. Who would’ve thought of plonking a supercharged 5.5L, 500 bhp engine into a G Class? But the G55 AMG quickly became a status symbol amongst the rich and Mercedes continues to make these even today and sell them at huge premiums
  • As if the gulling doors and long bonnet weren’t enough, Mercedes has gone ahead and announced, very recently, an AMG version of its SLS. The GT takes 3.6s to hit a tonne as compared to the 3.7s taken by the coupe. Power is up by 20hp too. That’s about all I can write, my jaw dropped a few seconds ago and I’m drooling on to the keyboard
  • Launched just this week with only a few photographs available on the internet, the A45 AMG celebrates 45 years of AMG. It’s also the first time AMG has ventured into the hatchback segment. But considering they’re planning to use a 308 bhp engine under the hood, this should be one hell of a car to drive. 45 years, and AMG’s just starting to warm up, flex its muscles to take on the competition
