BSM Car Of The Year 2007

Yes, the lead image is that of theBusiness Standard Motoring Car Of The Year 2007 – it is indeed the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA that walked away with the top honours this year. Congratulations to General Motors India for having swung the oldest awards in the country in its favour for 2007.

It was touch-and-go for the little Chevy – if it hadn't been launched barely a week back, it would never have made it to the list of contenders for 2007. That's right – only all-new cars that have been launched within the 2006 calendar year automatically qualify to be in the running for the 2007 awards. While the U-VA might have just made it in time to be in contention, it still had to fend off some seriously strong competition to get the highest award. It was a close call for the Chevrolet, and it was only when the total points rolled in that we could convincingly declare it our Car Of The Year (COTY). Here then, is how this clever hatchback made it to the hallowed list ofBusiness Standard Motoring Car Of The Year winners. And do turn to the Motoring page of this Weekend supplement to see which is theBusiness Standard Motoring Bike Of The Year 2007 and the winners of other awards.

Evaluation

All the cars that were launched in calendar year 2006 went through our extensive test regimen for our reports in the Business Standard Motoring magazine, www.bsmotoring.com and the Motoring page in the Weekend supplement. But for the COTY evaluation, we fixed up a final evaluation drive for the entire COTY jury. The jury comprised not just theBSM team, which has racked up significant experience in evaluating different automobiles over the years, but also external evaluators who spend a remarkable amount of time behind the wheels of diverse machines giving more objectivity to our evaluation. We laid out a special COTY evaluation drive route that would give all jury members the opportunity to drive all contenders across different terrain. The route was a 300-km long loop that took in slow, congested urban roads, double-carriageways, the fast Mumbai-Pune Expressway, rough patches and even a smooth, curvaceous mountain stretch. All in all, a gruelling, all-encompassing route that subjected the contenders to a thorough assessment.

Contenders

Sticking to tradition, we eliminated variants and engine options to begin with and concentrated only on the all-new machines.

Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo: Those who are familiar with the way we arrive at the BSM COTY will know that economy and affordability are things that can help a car through to the title. The Zen Estilo had both these factors going for it. That meant full marks (a total of 150 whopping points) earned straight away. It was obvious that the car will lose out on the performance front to stiff competition from bigger and more powerful machines. What was not obvious was the way the jury rated the Zen Estilo for subjective parameters. While the 1100cc motor earned due respect, the jury thrashed it for its notchy gearbox and dismal handling. While it was clear that the new car makes marketing sense, is not a worthy successor to the good old Zen as we knew it. The sad part is that styling, which Suzuki thinks is the selling point of car, couldn't score substantially either. The jury did appreciate the fact that the car can be bought with ABS and airbags though. If you are a prospective car buyer and you want something modern looking, economical and affordable, the Zen Estilo may still satisfy you big time – but it couldn't step into the shoes left by another Suzuki, the Swift, which had a clean sweep of the COTY scene last year.

Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia: Most of the jury members loved the Cedia. They loved the way the car looked, they spent quality time inside and were overheard talking about the traditional driving position and how much fun it is to drive. But when it came to awarding points they behaved like misers. Reason? The Cedia is late to the market and its powerplant has been calibrated for economy rather than performance. Still, the Mitsubishi scored quite well to earn the second or third spot in most performance parameters. Middle-of-the-road scoring for most subjective parameters and a non-value-for-money tag meant the Cedia lost out on overall counts. That said, it matched the Honda Civic for its handling prowess and the jury was liberal when it came to allotting fun-to-drive (FTD) points. A brilliant car that can do with some more performance. Quite a shame it comes to us at a time when an all-new model is due elsewhere in the world. Today car makers cannot blink when it comes to India – we are now getting used to launches almost simultaneously with Europe and the US (the Honda Civic and the Hyundai Verna are
examples) and it is only natural that older cars suffer in the hands of newer, more sophisticated competition.

Chevrolet Aveo: The three-box sedan from GMI was launched early in 2006 and has not done well due to various reasons – the lack of a diesel engine option is just one of them. Most enthusiasts prefer the 1.6 motor of the Ford Fiesta (if they are not inclined towards the Honda City VTEC, that is) and those who looked for extreme economy can opt for the excellent Fiesta TDCi. But the fact remains that the Aveo is a well thought out car that GM inherited from the erstwhile Daewoo lineup. The jury was not overtly impressed, but the car managed to score quite well in almost all parameters. Decent pep from the 1.6 motor gave it good performance ratings while the modern appearance, great ride quality and decent fit and finish were appreciated too. The ex-showroom price of the car is marginally over the desirable benchmark for this year and the Aveo lost out on points in this front. The story was different with the hatch-version though!

Hyundai Verna 1.6 and 1.5 CRDi: It is time we got used to the idea of a diesel car being more powerful than its petrol cousin. And when the entire jury votes the diesel a better driver's car than the refined petrol motor, then we have to take the diesel version very seriously. The contagious acceleration of the strong diesel motor earned sizzling points for the Verna and the car scored consistently on both performance and subjective ratings to finish third overall. While the diesel managed to match the petrol on most counts, it scored a clear victory in the FTD scale. And then the diesel extracted more points for its economy (stunning 15 kpl with performance runs thrown in). Hyundai's business plan for the Verna includes the older Accent and that means the cars are not as affordable as they should have been. A factor that didn't help the Verna in the COTY scheme of things.

Honda Civic:
Easily the best car of the pack as long as we don't apply the rather complex COTY formula with weightages for price and fuel economy in this equation. It is as state-of-the-art as it gets and is brilliant on the move. Unlike its predecessor, the new Civic is futuristic to look at and thanks to the brilliant i-VTEC motor, it has the go to match the looks. Throw in decent ride quality and near neutral handling, and you get a car that no prospective buyer can go wrong with. The jury appreciated the several innovations in the Civic that has taken car building in India to a higher level altogether. Screaming performance and reasonable economy are things that go together with the Civic. The jury showered points on the Civic and it outscored each of its competitors this year on almost every parameter except on the price front. It scored almost a perfect ten (15, as in our case) for looks – something Hondas of the past couldn't think of. The jury was also impressed by the way the Civic handled speeds that its engine is capable of propelling it to. Very high level of equipment, safety features and excellent fit and finish were all factors that kept the score high till the heavy penalty for being expensive took the wind off the sails for the Civic. It is seriously one car that made us consider reworking the BSM COTY parameters – but then this is India and Rs 11.29 lakh ex-showroom is way too off the price paid by the average Indian car buyer. Still, what a car!

Which brings us to the one car that stood head and shoulders above the rest, the winner this year...

Business Standard Motoring Car Of The Year 2007 – Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

Squeezing in at the nick of time, steadily building up points all the way to the front and emerging a surprise winner – beating the likes of the virtually invincible Honda Civic, the almost-everything-going-for-it Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo and the well-balanced Hyundai Verna twins. With this kind of competition, the U-VA was almost the underdog. It had nothing extraordinary going for it. For example, it is not as future-proof as the Civic, it does not have the Maruti-Suzuki Midas touch like the Zen Estilo and it didn't have the engine performance that the Verna promised. Yet it beat competitors as formidable as these.

The secret is that the U-VA did consistently well in all the parameters without emerging too strong in any single one. The performance may not be exceptional, especially when looked at it in sterile 0 to 60 kph or 0 to 100 kph terms, yet its little 1150cc motor surprised the jury with its spunky, cheerful attitude. And the best part is that it's an efficient engine that's miserly with the unleaded. In our list of subjective parameters that includes elements like drivetrain, driveability, ride, handling and build quality, the U-VA gained decent scores, which contributed to its winning total. General Motors India has equipped the U-VA with quite a comprehensive safety package as well as other comfort features, which notched up a significant chunk of points for the Chevy. And finally, the persuasive price tag, arrived at by GMI to make it competitive in the market place and also helped along by the excise duty cut for small cars, sealed the deal for the Chevy.

A small car on the outside, comforts of a big car on the inside, reasonable performance, sorted-out dynamics, comprehensively equipped with features, and more importantly, wearing a value-for-money price tag is about as ideal as it gets. That's what the little Chevy manages. And that's not all. The U-VA is an accomplished, grown-up hatchback that doesn't make its buyer feel that he has made a compromise – it's that feel-good factor, the magical element that makes the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA theBusiness Standard Motoring Car Of The Year 2007. Well done, General Motors India!

This is absolute cheating - looks like GM paid you guys tons of money. I am sorry to say this, I just do not see the U-VA selling in large numbers. An outdated Daewoo Kalos engine that would have been more appropriate pre-millennium, middle of the road in everything else - looks, performance and backed by GM which has never had a reputation for outstanding service. Hey, you guys have not even published a test drive and solicited feedback from readers. I can bet my last buck that U-VA won't even match the Getz, forget the swift. I would have imagined a Verna or a Civic would have been a more approriate choice. What say you other readers' ?

I am surprised, an average looking, not so great performing car, your comments "It had nothing extraordinary going for it." AND still its car of the year 2007??? Day dreaming ??? Generally you have car test review published before you dare to comment on it. Here the results are already out with out giving exam. Congrats......keep it up.

surprising

This is a total farce. U-Va as a car of the year just does not seem to be digestible. You may try what you want with this award. But the fact remains that it is just cheating and nothing else

But what about the mileages?

Posted by Prakash Advani on Tue, 02 January 2007 (permalink)
BS Motoring has always provided unbiased reviews. But one key think is missed in the review is the mileage and the running costs. Thats where GM usually costs more and in premium hatchback segement its a critical decision factor.

I somewhat agree with the guy above. U-VA is not even there on the roads!. It definately does NOT deserve to be the Car of the year!. You guyz should have a limit of atleast 1 december. Either ways i do not expect U-VA to be a hot seller or s deserving winner.

THIS IS CHEATING

Posted by satish on Tue, 02 January 2007 (permalink)
yes i agree with u Chevy sells all bullshit & left over stock of daewoo cars in india with there badge, & cannot come closer to HONDA Civic or Skoda Laura. My choice for car of the year 2007 is Skoda Laura. didn't expected this from BSM (cheated ).

Aveo UVA

hi, the car definitely has a feel good factor and it is roomy inside. Witholding the impression that american cars are fuel guzzlers & the GM dealers assuring that this one's good on mileage I only need to be reassured if it really is a better bet than the others in its category. swift & getz are certainly not good in terms of mileage. however if UVA proves itself its definitely going to be one of the best selling cars after santro in this category.

Known to GM

Person who just know a brief history of car will talk like anything. Dewoo Kalos & new updated U-Va is having lot of updations. Only looking at exterior you can not comment about its performance. U-Va is though it is not excellent in ant perticurs.. but it serves all requirement of indian roader very well in balanced way. I am from Automotive feild & I am designing the car, exterior & interior & my other colleges are working engine. I know very well about Swift, U-va & Getz. U-Va is Best.!! in premium segment hatchback.

I think this year the ranking has been done in a haste. While ranking one should also consider older models vis a vis the new ones. Also one should include upgraded models of earlier ones. For example if the new Wagon R is better than UVA it should be definitely considered.!!!

Daewoo blood

Posted by Dr. Nayak on Wed, 03 January 2007 (permalink)
Even though it is difficult to agree with the clueless BS editorial staff, this is a good and correct decision. It seems most of the people are angry just because the car has some Daewoo blood.

This is degradation of the award and the magazine!!

Posted by Auto Info on Wed, 03 January 2007 (permalink)
I was shocked to know that this magazine has voted an average car like U-VA as the Car of the year 2007.And if this magazine finds the Honda Civic expensive, they better stop writing , even testing All the cars costing more than Rs.10lakhs.

Best out of waste !!!

Very stong resistance on the U-VA winning the COTY.I share the same feeling, though the car has space, interiors and promises milage but would it match the stature of Maruti Suzuki Swift...m sure it can never do that ..n it's the long term performance and customer satisfaction that has not been kept in mind ...Anyways,now it's done ...humans make mistakes...

If Getz & Swift then why not U-VA

Posted by WizardofID on Wed, 03 January 2007 (permalink)
Well, If the Hyundai Getz, which is by no means a great car (and indeed a very very boring looking one), could win COTY, then why not the U-VA. If the U-VA has all the features of the Getz, nearly the same power, better ergonomics, then that should put it in serious contention. It is good to see that BSM has put objective parametric ranking over 'feel'. Most readers would feel that the Civic and the Verna CRDi should have been prime contenders. But price and mileage would have done them in. But I do agree with another response that we should not allow unreleased cars to participate.

Joke of the year

Posted by Dhana on Wed, 03 January 2007 (permalink)
By voting U-VA the car of the year, BS have given us the joke of the year. Look at the specs of the variants and you dont get a fog lamp, tachometer, Headlamp On/ Key Inside Reminder Beep in the LS model which is the equivalelnt of VXi in Swift. But price wise both are the same. U-VA has got 13" tyres whereas Swift has got 14" tyres. But we have U-VA priced on par with Swift. What a joke. Though not a great Honda fan, for me the car of the year is the Civic.

Why prejudice against GM/daewoo

Posted by Vineet on Wed, 03 January 2007 (permalink)
I am really surprised by the negative connotations attached to all things GM/Daewoo. I have been driving a Corsa since 2003, which was a flop by the way, and I can assure you that it is miles ahead in comfort, stability, pickup, and smoothness than Honda City, or Maruti Esteem/Baleno or Ikon. Japanese cars do have a reputtation for quality/service, but as for my 3-year experience, no problems at all with the Corsa or the dealers or availability of spares. So stop living in the 1990s when all non-Maruti cars were tagged as difficult to repair by any road side mechanic. OK, GM cars give lower fuel efficiency (my Corsa gives 12 in winters) but then GM has a tradition of discounts. Remember, Swift and Getz have had not the success as expected only cos of fuel efficiency, and if UVA gives comparable efficiency, I would definitely actively consider a GM car.

The contest was rigged

Posted by darknight on Thu, 04 January 2007 (permalink)
i havent seen even 10 Aveos on the road. A honda Civic or even a ford fiesta would have been a more appropriate choice. this is a total farce. This car is no match for the Verna or ever a dated Zen estillo. People who own aveos a planning to get rid of them as they are not satisfied.

My COTY vote goes to the Skoda Laura

Posted by stephen on Thu, 04 January 2007 (permalink)
I don't know about the UVA as COTY 2007, but my COTY vote would have been the Skoda Laura, the 'poor man's BMW.' Laura is a nice big car, with lots of interior space and every imaginable comfort convenience imaginable. It is very quiet inside the cabin and the stereo system and speakers are incredible. With huge tires, it is like riding on air. Main drawback of the Laura is that it is too costly, costing around 20 lakhs.

Questions... questions...

Posted by Akhtar S K on Thu, 04 January 2007 (permalink)
Yes I seem to agree with most of the views expressed here about AVEO AU-VA being declared COTY by BS Mrotoring in a hurry, without a proper test drive etc. With all due respect to their criterion of selection for the coveted award I think it holds true only in the typical Indian context becasue despite the fact that there is nothing "extra ordinary" about the car the only factor which seems to have worked in its favour is its price ( it matters and matters a lot here) - here we must compliment GM for what appears to be the "right" one vis-a-vis the compettion in the same class. GM does not have the same image as that of Maruti or Hyundai in India but now I guess they have got it right - the recent successes of OPTRA and Tavera is a testimony to this. With this car and ensuing launch of Matiz/Spark they seem on the right track. All the best to GM.

Car of the year 2008??

Posted by Mathew S P on Thu, 04 January 2007 (permalink)
Rightly said, cars should be selected on objective criteria. COTY may or may not be financially rewarding to you or the companies, but for buyers, it should be cars which they have had a chance to buy in that year atleast, so that they can have the satisfaction of empathising with you guys at Autocar.

GM has been lobbying very hard towards the last few months to get a few COTY awards from various "vendors". It seems to have succeeded with BSM. Acording to insider news, they had set aside a significant budget to get the reviews favoring them even though they did not have deserving product. Some other mag awards however seems to have stayed away from this vicious campaign.

Shock!

Posted by Venkat on Fri, 05 January 2007 (permalink)
Even GM would be shocked by your choice!!

Dissapointing!

Posted by Hemant on Fri, 05 January 2007 (permalink)
First time I heard about the Aveo in a big way was the GM Ad announcing its COTY status to the world. Obviously a verdict which is so out of tune with the general sentiment must be rigged or purposefully thought of by those advertising fellas to generate negative pulicity. Anyway, the UV-A sure looks competent, one only wishes GM showed some class in the way they do things.

A VERY PROPER CHOICE

Posted by felix on Fri, 05 January 2007 (permalink)
I agree that this award has been done in a hurry but i would never say that this is a wrong choice. GM has struck gold ever since they have aquired DAEWOO. The Cars that GM sells now are all the latest with the latest in technology which can easily go against cars from HONDA,TOYOTA and HYUNDAI. U-VA is an alrounder thats why it wins the award and its a car that the common man can own. Cars under the Chevrolet Brand have low cost spares and great warranty having owned one. I own a maruti swift too which is very bad on mileage and the built quality is really not up to the mark. yes it has performance and power feel but finally when it comes down to spending money on the car its not a very easy car to drive mainly bcos of the fuel efficiency and the car is really not easy to park with lesses space than the U-VA.Its loses out to swift power, auto matic ac and performance but it has loads of space, fuel efficiency and the best warranty with the lowest cost of spares.

Verna- Car of the year.

Posted by Jamil on Mon, 08 January 2007 (permalink)
I cant even imagine u-va being the car of the year. Verna crdi or Honda Civic deserve that prestigious position of BS Motoring. Uva has no looks, no value for money, no mileage nothing. Then how come u people made u-va the car of the year.I think Verna crdi deserves this position. Good Looks , Solid Perfomance, Great Power, Nice Mileage , Good value for money and a Rocking Diesel Engine all these things makes Verna THE CAR OF THE YEAR>

Civic deserves it more

Posted by Pravesh on Tue, 09 January 2007 (permalink)
Well, i dont understand why do u guys comment that Civic is expensive for average indian car buyer. It is not meant for him/her. It is thoroughly well equipped for its price & has set a value for money benchmark in its segment. U guys have rejected Civic only because of its price which is unfair. i feel ur decision is biased. Civic is the deserving contender here!!

UVA Deserves

Posted by B.John on Tue, 09 January 2007 (permalink)
The award is based on a system and it is OK. It could have been better if the price, accessories, acceleration, fuel efficiency, etc are compared quantitatively & ride and handling issues qualitatively in the article. This might have cleared prejudiced comments. Many won't know Maruti would not have existed in India (which had been losing to cometition financially and technically) if GM took over Daewoo in time with all its assets.

AVEO UVA booking wait list

Posted by Deep Darshan Singh on Sun, 21 January 2007 (permalink)
hi, i had almost decided on maruti swift vxi when i heard about uva's launch and decided to check it out. i went to shiva motors showroom at csm noida and the beauty of uva struck me. its a very well packaged car, very spacious with good looks and well, i decided to go ahead. i have booked the car, but the dealer says the delivery will take atleast 45 to 60 days. this is too much of a wait time for someone who had nearly decided to buy (swift).. also, vehicle is not available for test drive..so i have to take your review as far as on road performance of this car goes..

spoof!

Posted by it could be a farce on Mon, 22 January 2007 (permalink)
it looks like a farce for sure. after booking UVA at one of the leading dealers in the south-west Delhi/NCR region ages ago, the delivery is yet to happen. furthermore, the dealer also promised (as also published by chevrolet in the brochures) a stereo in the LT model of UVA. To my shock and dismay the same dealer just confirmed that the stereo is not available in any of the models, the brochures however state otherwise. READ: http://www.chevrolet.co.in/content_data/AP/IN/en/GBPIN/001/BRANDSITE/aveouva_standard.html is GM bringing out a farce or is it really a COTY? i think COTY is kind of overstated, at least now i'm beginning to think. Also, the colours that i asked for (cashmere/forrest green) are yet to come out inspite of the promise made by the dealer for a specific date. chevrolet or may be its dealer (it is bad anyway for the company) is cooking a spoof. BEWARE!

False Promises

Posted by Amit on Wed, 21 February 2007 (permalink)
It looks like dealer and company making false promises to the customers. I have booked the car with (UDIT MOTORS THANE) almost 45 days back but still waiting for the delivery. However I had promised by the dealer that I would get the delivery in 2 weeks. I am going to wait for week or so, otherwise I will cancel my order and go for some other Car.

U-va is an average rated car.I was about to buy a santro. After hearing about uva i cancelled.Hyundai people called me many times but i wantd to see a uva.Total i have called more than 20 times from oct-march and finally they could show me the car on 31 march, by now i have lost interest on that car. They couldnt give right information about when it is coming to market. Now they say there is 2 month waiting. And the real joke is u cant see an uva or an aveo.I think in this age of competion they r taking oder and assemblig it. I think GM is thinking of 70s when we used to be in q for a scooter.Over that that they have increased price. They must learn how to market properly in recent Indian condition.Otherwise uva will be a great flop.

ITS A SMOOTH SAIL!!!

Dear Friends, U-VA is nowhere on the road, there is no stock available with the dealers. believe me, there is a lot of excitement amongst the ppl who have test driven it. it is very smooth and dont ask about the fantastic gas filled shock absorbers.... no doubt it had a better drive quality than swift(already own) and getz... the comments about it being an old model are not justified, as apparently everyones fav swift is jus a make up model of 15yrs old esteem engine.. wont ask more.. but just press the paddle at a stalled car and listen to the engine to find out more about u-va.... car will be a hit.. mileage of 15.5 in city without AC.. huge space in front n rear... compromise a lil on the interiors... but those who want a decent looking car, UVA is tha one... swift seems to be foolin in every nukk n corner.. consider uva now..

Change your mind set

Posted by Akash M on Tue, 19 June 2007 (permalink)
UVA is a very good looking car and it rigtly deserves being the car of the year. Even if the engine is borrowed from Daewoo. whts the harm?? To everybody's surprise, my Ceilo has clocked 4 lakh kms without engine overhaul and it runs like a dream. The only problem why cheverolet cars sell less in india is that people dont like risking buying any other brand than Maruti and Hyundai. If the car would had been a maruti product i.e Maruti U-VA, it would have sold like hot cakes. So, we people should change our mind sets and go for such cars. Moreover, Maruti has never dared to offer 1 lakh km warranty on any car unlike the Chevy cars...

AVEO-UVA over Swift

Hi, I was in dilemma on which hatch back to purchase. Went for test drive for Swift, was told i can take a drive after two days. Why? Car has to come from other showroom sir. Ok., how many days it takes to deliver? anywhere between 2 - 3 months. Do you really want to book and wait for this car. I think those days of waiting list is over. I checked the UV-A test drive and delivery status. 1 week delivery period max. Good car. Why not go for UV-A? I am buying UV-A in a week 's time. On safety, UV-A definitely scores high in its class. I have seen Swifts lot after accidents, most crunched. UV-A engine drops to the ground on impact, there by saving the cabin occupants from fatality.

After lot of analysis and test drive of almost all the cars like i10, Santro, Estilo, swift and U-VA i decided to go for U/VA. I tested it @ 140Km per Hour. It really touched the speed in no time and have powerful and reliable break. U can trust this machine. Its spacious with good look, good AC and powerful engine in its segment. I has all the quality to being a favourite family car. Its 15 plus mileage is value addition with 3yrs warranty.
