The Fiat 500 is back. Rejoice!

500 reasons to smile July 4, 2007 will be the 231st year since the United States gained its independence. But importantly, it will also be the Fiat Nuova 500's 50th anniversary. And on that day, Fiat will reveal the all-new
Fiat 500, its third iteration since the original 500, better known as the Topolino, was introduced more than 70 years back.

Like the Mini and the Beetle, the 500 or Cinquecento is one of Europe's iconic small cars. Beginning its life in the 1930s as the Topolino (which translates to Little Mouse, or some say, Mickey Mouse), it was at that time the world's smallest mass-produced car. Engineered by the famous Dante Giacosa, the little Fiat was powered by a four-cylinder 569cc engine that was placed ahead of the front axle, but powered the rear wheels. The first 500 became a legend in its lifetime for allowing more Europeans to drive their own cars. After WWII, Italy was in a phase of painful restructuring and re-building. That's when Fiat stepped in with the Nuova 500 in 1957. The new generation Cinquecento, with its 479cc two-cylinder air-cooled engine and compact dimensions, began a new cult. From engine changes to performance versions, the 500 caught the fancy of post-Mussolini Italy like a house on fire. It was brilliant to drive, while its average of 20 kpl plus probably left some Italian oil companies in the red. Nevertheless, it went on to become such a big hit, that 3.8 million of those tiny two-door four-seaters found homes in Europe and left behind an indelible mark in motoring history.

Since its troubles in the early part of this century, Fiat has struggled to revive its fortunes until it developed cars like the new Fiat Panda and Grande Punto. Now, with the Nuova 500, it looks like Fiat will only go on to consolidate its recovery. Powering the new 500 are three four-cylinder engines. A 1200cc 69 bhp petrol, a 1400cc 100 bhp petrol and the 1248cc, 75 bhp multijet diesel found also on the Suzuki Swift. Softer edges with a great paint finish and a design that builds on the 500 of yore, the new car is as retro-futuristic as it can get. The interiors too have every conceivable amenity and gizmo that one would come to expect from a modern hatchback. But the biggest prize catch is the price, which Fiat claims will be within the reach of several small car buyers. The first two 500s changed the way people drove, and it looks like the third one
will drive change at Fiat.

I m also very curious about such unconventional City Vehicals which break ground , stand apart, and solve the purpose obediently. Looks chick like new Beetle. But what I expected n found missimg Is the array of engines, I mean to say they are bit oversized for the car. Better they have thought of 600 cc turbocharged Petrol Or a similar capacity Hybrid, would have added 4 moons to the beauty.

You all know about Fiat... Even though it has launched latest generation interiors for the much loved and accepted car Palio elsewhere, it has not and is not planning to introduce it in India. We have to live with 3 generation old, ugly looking Dash. Such is the treatment we get from Fiat. How can you expect them to Launch a car like this here??

I just don't understand why everyone wants to know when this car will be launched in India. Is it a car worth to be driven in India? I don't think so. Its stupid looking and ugly with two doors only. Blended with Fiat's notorious history in our country, who wants this car here! Any day Japanese cars are better than European ones in terms of price, build quality, fuel efficiency, and service.

In another 10 years all of us will be pushing or pedalling the cars, looking at the way we are guzzling precious oil! Then we will see what happens to all these cars!! Forget Mercedes, folks! Hello Cycles!

Chick?? ARE U RETARDED??... It doesnt look anything great...looks like the old model anyway..well..VW and BMW did a much better job with Beetle and Mini respectively... The swift sold internationally is much nicer than this anyway.. In India a two door hatchback may not be practical..

The only reason, that I can figure out for launching the car in Srilanka and not in India because, may be they they do not trust Fiat India{ their own arm}, may be Fiat India is not competent enough to ask for it from the parent company, may be the company is not capable of fullfilling the demand of the Indian market, or may be the car is not strong enough to last on the Indian roads. I cannot sense anything else.

i want this

this car is to good i like it very much the small cut and i want it where can i contact to get that and how much will it cost to get it to india.

Great Car

Im not sure the car has actually ben launched in Sri Lanka....But in argument to some people here about japanese cars being better... i disagree. The fiat 500 is one of the cars thats going to turn around the fortunes of the fiat company world wide...its an excellent car with excellent build quality and totallly up todate styling. Nothing wrong with 2 doors...makes cars look alot neater if you ask me... if u want the practicality of four doors get a zen and live with a car 10 yrs behind. That more or less defines the japanese car market in India. I have seen the 500 at motorshows in the UK and its an exceptionally great car which should be offered in India!!! And the best bit being.. it will very soon.

Fiat has so many amazing cars in it's stable but why is it shy to launch those cars in india when those cars are doing good in european and american market.....................

FIAT 500 is classic concept, a remake of a old classic. very much like the VW Beetle and MG Mini Cooper. I am sure Fiat 500 would give Fiat a new breath of life. I am very doubtful of Fiat introducing this concept in a third world country like India.

Fiat 500 & Lara dutta

Posted by Abilash on Tue, 22 July 2008 (permalink)
I saw this car & its launch pics. Though the car looks exciting the price is too high for Fiat to make an impact. I feel Fiat should revive its models & service network & then launch its exciting model range... Also they should have roped in a better young role model to promote the same. Lara dutta does not quite fit in the 500 image...

Cant afford guys

Posted by Himanshu on Thu, 07 August 2008 (permalink)
Just read the details and the price tag for this cute machine...In India It'll cost 15 Lakhs and thats more than the cost of a Civic. If I can spend that much I would rather go for Honda any day.
