Run to the hills

Okay, so it's that time of the year again when the Himalayan ranges come calling and I have no option but to succumb to the all-encompassing pull of the mountains and plan a trip up there.   And it has to be on a motorcycle because, besides trekking or cycling, it's the only way to truly experience the mountains. It's been a long time since I've been to the upper reaches of the Himalayas - all of 10 bloody months! - and the wait has been agonizing. It's completely addictive for some people and I clearly belong to that bunch.

And since I plan on not blowing my yearly savings on it, planning has to precise and careful. Its incredibly easy to just pick up more and more gear and tools and accessories and what not. And then there's always the temptation to upgrade your current kit. Better jacket, better shoes, better tyres, and the list just keeps on coming. Its never enough!

So, for a person who's always guilty of overpacking, good advice came from a friend who's an experienced mountaineer. His logic sounds obvious but doesn't quite hit you immediately. The logic is that you should pack for just half the days that you're actually going to travel, with a few exceptions. And then an aptly named video called Packing Like A Boss (or is it Baws?) on YouTube (God bless that site) has some incredible techniques for packing. Might sound stupid but it really does help on a big trip.

Anyways, enough of packing and preparation - its time to head out. The route that I'm most kicked about this year is the lonely stretch between Panggong Tso and Tso Moriri via Chushul. It's a lovely but harsh 650 km ride without any fuel stops but with some really incredible scenery. I can't wait!
